A May of antique roses, art, and music at the Royal Castle of Govone
Every year, as May arrives, the Royal Castle of Govone opens its halls and gardens for Regalmente Rosa, a festival dedicated to spring and the charm of historic gardens. Established in 2003 and grown into a beloved monthly tradition, the event centers on the blooming of the antique roses that once enchanted King Charles Felix of Savoy and his wife, Maria Cristina, a passionate botanist.
The castle stands in the town of Govone, in the province of Cuneo, amidst the Roero hills in Piedmont. Once a noble palace and later a royal residence, it was the sovereign's preferred retreat for rest and tranquility during his summer vacations. Today, it is part of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy circuit, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and is open for visits every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The botanical heart of the festival is the King Charles Felix Rose Garden, where antique roses return to bloom each spring. Every Sunday in May, expert guides lead visitors through the rose garden and historic grounds, sharing stories of the cultivated species and the passion that once animated the Savoy court.
Regalmente Rosa is more than just nature. The Sundays of the month host concerts from the Govone Smart Music series in the evocative Ballroom, alongside contemporary art exhibitions, historical re-enactments curated by local associations, and activities designed for children, such as themed treasure hunts and reading sessions.
Set among the Roero hills, just a few kilometers from Alba and Asti, Regalmente Rosa is the perfect invitation for a spring getaway that weaves together natural beauty, historical memory, and culture.
The 2026 edition of Regalmente Rosa took place throughout the month of May at the Royal Castle of Govone, in the province of Cuneo. The castle remained open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 18:00. The program intertwined contemporary art, music, guided tours of the historic gardens, and family activities, within one of Piedmont's Savoy Residences.
The Royal Castle of Govone is located at Piazza Roma 1, in the town's historic center, in the province of Cuneo. By car, it can be reached from Alba and Asti by following signs for Govone; the castle sits atop a hill with cobblestone access. By train, the reference station is Asti, with onward connections by bus or car.
The castle is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 to 12:30 and 15:00 to 18:00 (last entry 30 minutes before closing).
Full price entry is 8 euros, reduced 6 euros (over 65s, students up to 24, teachers). Free for children under 14 and holders of the Abbonamento Musei Piemonte, Torino+Piemonte Card, and Royal Card. Many Regalmente Rosa events (concerts, rose garden tours) are free, often requiring reservation.
