The quadrilles and allegorical floats of the most traditional carnival in inland Sicily
The Regalbuto Carnival, located in the heart of the Enna province, is one of the most deeply rooted and heartfelt carnival events in all of inland Sicily. Its origins date back to the late 19th century, when the carnival served as a propitiatory ritual to ward off the hardships accumulated during winter and to wish for a bountiful harvest. Over the decades, the festival has evolved into a more playful, transgressive, and satirical celebration, becoming the most anticipated event of the year for the town.
The element that truly makes the Regalbuto Carnival unique is the controdanze (or quadrilles): group dances involving twelve couples dressed in sumptuous costumes inspired by different eras and places, the result of months of artisanal preparation. The choreographies, which become more complex each year, are rooted in the late-winter dances once used by farming communities to welcome the arrival of spring. It is a spectacle that showcases fabrics, colors, and movements handed down from generation to generation.
Alongside the 'controdanze', the allegorical floats—handcrafted by local groups ranging from youths to master float-makers—parade through the streets, accompanied by masked groups that animate the main street with their sharp satire on current events. During the peak days, about a thousand people in costume walk through the town center, creating a colorful river of music, dancing, and confetti that involves all age groups.
The festivities are spread over about a month, with dance evenings and events on weekends, but the celebration explodes in the three days preceding Ash Wednesday, when the gathering takes place in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and the parade travels along the town's main street. The Regalbuto Carnival is now considered one of the most important on the entire island and attracts visitors from all over Sicily.
Organized with the support of the Municipality of Regalbuto and local associations, the carnival is much more than just a party: it is the moment when the entire community identifies with its own traditions. Participating means immersing yourself in an authentic carnival, far from mass tourism, where hand-sewn costumes and inherited dances are worth more than any improvised show.
The 77th edition of the Regalbuto Carnival confirmed the vitality of one of the oldest carnival traditions in inland Sicily. During the three peak days, from February 15 to 17, 2026, the town came alive for about seventy-two consecutive hours with spectacular parades of allegorical floats, quadrilles, and masked groups. The gathering took place in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, from where the parades started along the main street.
The absolute protagonists were the controdanze, with the twelve costumed couples engaged in increasingly elaborate choreographies, and the satire that characterized the floats and groups. Despite threatening weather forecasts, the organizers ensured that all shows went ahead, amidst music and dancing for all ages.
The festival was concentrated in the three days preceding Ash Wednesday, with about seventy-two consecutive hours of events.
The full calendar of festivities, including the dance evenings of the preceding weekends, was published on the official Regalbuto Carnival Facebook page.
Regalbuto is located in the province of Enna, in central Sicily, a short distance from Lake Pozzillo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit towards Regalbuto), then following the SS121 and SS575 roads. The nearest airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso.
Access to the parades and shows is free. The events take place along the streets of the town center, with the gathering and departure point at Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
During the peak days, the center is very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outlying areas. For updated parade times, it is recommended to check the official Facebook page of the Carnival and the website of the Municipality of Regalbuto.
