The September 8th devotion and the floral 'Cristi' of Centuripe
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna delle Grazie Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in Centuripe, a picturesque town in the province of Enna, Sicily. Perched at an altitude of over 700 meters on a hill overlooking the Simeto River valley, the town gathers every September 8th to venerate the Virgin of Grace, in an event that weaves together popular devotion, tradition, and folklore.
Devotion to the Madonna delle Grazie dates back to the 16th century. According to local tradition, the cult began in 1534, when Friar Andrea del Guasto promoted the construction of a place of prayer in Centuripe dedicated to the Virgin, which would become the current Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie. Since then, the community of Centuripe has fervently upheld this devotion, which continues to draw both locals and returning emigrants back to the town for the festival.
The most distinctive and spectacular element of the festival is the Cristi infiorati, a tradition passed down in Centuripe since 1789. These are large figures of Christ entirely covered in flower petals, depicting major themes of the faith. Each brotherhood carries its own floral Christ on their shoulders, while a member holds the banner: a procession of colors, scents, and faith that winds through the streets of the historic center.
The day of September 8th begins with the firing of mortars and the ringing of festive bells. After the celebration of Holy Mass, the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie is carried in procession from the sanctuary through the town streets, moving up and down the alleys of the historic center amidst the moving participation of the community. Religious rites are accompanied by moments of popular tradition, such as the parade of carters with their typical decorated Sicilian carts, fireworks, and banquets along the streets.
Visiting Centuripe during the festival is also an opportunity to discover one of the most scenic villages on the island, nicknamed the 'balcony city' for its extraordinary views of Mount Etna and the Simeto Valley. Between archaeological remains from the Greek and Roman eras, historic churches, and alleys climbing the hillside, the Madonna delle Grazie Festival offers the chance to experience the authentic religious and popular soul of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna delle Grazie Festival in Centuripe is expected, as per tradition, around September 8th. At the moment, the detailed program, including times for celebrations, the procession, and side events, has not yet been published by the organizers. The distinctive elements of the festival are confirmed: the procession of the statue of the Madonna through the streets of the historic center and the evocative parade of the 'Cristi infiorati' carried on the shoulders of the brotherhoods. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
Centuripe can be reached by car from Catania (approx. 46 km) and Enna (approx. 65 km) by taking the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway and following the provincial roads that climb up to the village. The nearest train station is located at the valley floor; a car is recommended to reach the historic center.
The festivities take place every year on September 8th, culminating in the evening procession.
The historic center is characterized by narrow, sloping alleys: comfortable footwear is recommended. During the festival, the town comes alive with stalls and social gatherings; it is advisable to arrive early to find parking in the areas outside the center.
