The patronal feast of Regalbuto featuring the laurel procession, relics, and fireworks
In the heart of inland Sicily, where the Erei Mountains overlook Lake Pozzillo, the municipality of Regalbuto, in the province of Enna, celebrates its most important festival every year: the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival. From August 8th to 11th, the town transforms into a grand stage of faith and tradition, drawing back Regalbutesi from across the globe who return home for these very days. It is one of the most characteristic patronal feasts in the Sicilian hinterland, where religious devotion and folk culture merge into a single, intense collective narrative.
August 8th opens with the most identifying ritual: the laurel procession. In the days leading up to the feast, the faithful travel to the outskirts of Agira to gather laurel branches, known in the local dialect as "zahareddi". The procession is led by the antinni, tall poles covered in laurel and adorned with colorful handkerchiefs and red ribbons, the latter a reference to the Saint's martyrdom. Balanced by ropes and carried on shoulders, the antinni parade through the town streets to the churchyard of the Mother Church, where the laurel is blessed. It is an ancient gesture, a Christian interpretation of symbols of glory and honor with even more remote origins.
August 9th is the most solemn moment, with the procession of the relics of Saint Vitus. Kept in the church, the relics include parts of the skull, an arm, and a foot of the Saint, enclosed in a precious silver reliquary. The procession commemorates the arrival of the relics in Regalbuto in 1547 and reaches the small church in Piazza San Vito, in the Tribona district, built specifically to commemorate that event. It is the historical bond that forms the religious identity of the community.
The days of August 10th and 11th are dedicated to the procession of the statue of the Saint. On August 11th, the statue travels through the historic center along Via Don G. Campione, Via Catania, Via Roma, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, and Corso G. F. Ingrassia, reaching Piazza della Repubblica, accompanied by a festive crowd. Late in the evening, the sky of Regalbuto ignites with a grand fireworks display, the grand finale of four days of celebration.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival enlivens every neighborhood with music, illuminations, market stalls, games, and moments of conviviality. The traditional fair in the Calvario district completes the picture of a festival that, in the height of summer, gathers the community of Regalbuto around its deepest roots, in the name of Saint Vitus, the patron saint, and the Sicilian tradition of patronal feasts.
The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival 2026 confirms the traditional calendar for the patron saint of Regalbuto, from August 8th to 11th. The program follows the established pattern: on August 8th, the laurel procession with the antinni; on August 9th, the procession of the relics towards the Tribona district; and on August 11th, the procession of the statue through the historic center, with the customary fireworks display late in the evening. The detailed program, including times for celebrations and side events, will be published by the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
Regalbuto is located in the province of Enna, in central Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Mulinello or Catenanuova exits) and the SS121. The nearest train station is in Catenanuova; the reference airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The festival takes place every year from August 8th to 11th. The highlights are the laurel procession (August 8th), the procession of the relics (August 9th), and the procession of the statue with fireworks (August 11th, late evening).
Admission to the rites and processions is free. In mid-August, temperatures are high: we recommend bringing water, a hat, and light clothing. For accommodation, in addition to Regalbuto, facilities in nearby towns such as Agira, Centuripe, and Catenanuova are useful.
