Floats, masquerades, and tradition in the hometown of Leonardo Sciascia
The Racalmuto Carnival, located in the heart of the Agrigento province, is one of the most heartfelt celebrations in the Sicilian hinterland. It takes place in the town that gave birth to the writer Leonardo Sciascia, winding through the streets and squares of the historic center, with Piazza Umberto I serving as the hub of the festivities. Organized by the Municipality of Racalmuto with the involvement of local associations, the event transforms the village into a stage of color, music, and fun for several days.
The heart of the festival lies in the parades of allegorical floats, which are considered true works of art on wheels. These creations, the result of months of work and creativity by local groups and associations, showcase themes ranging from political and social satire to pure fantasy. They are accompanied by costumed groups, who bring the procession to life along the streets of Racalmuto with dances and choreography.
Among the most characteristic traditions is the giovedì delle comari (Thursday of the Godmothers), a pre-carnival ritual where 'comari'—friends and neighbors—would gather to share a meal and strengthen community bonds. It is a custom deeply rooted in the mining history of Racalmuto, which still retains its value as a collective celebration and social event today.
The Racalmuto Carnival also caters to children, with entertainment and music dedicated to kids in Piazza Umberto I, in a festive and safe environment. Evenings are accompanied by live music and DJ sets. The highlight is Shrove Tuesday, when the final awards ceremony takes place: prizes are awarded for the best float, the most beautiful costume, and the best costumed group, followed by dances that close days of pure fun in high spirits.
Part of the Carnival circuit in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, the Racalmuto Carnival is an authentic and popular festival, far from the main tourist flows but rich in identity. It is a perfect opportunity to discover a Sicilian inland village in its most joyful and participatory form.
