The celebration of the traditional Salento bread with Leccese olives, in Ugento
The Puccia Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in Ugento, a town in the province of Lecce overlooking the Ionian Sea, in the heart of lower Salento. Established in 1995, the event has grown year after year to become a staple of the Apulian festival calendar, drawing both locals and tourists to the city's historic center.
Like many of the best Salento festivals, the event is built around a single signature product: the puccia. This focused approach allows for an authentic showcase of a food deeply rooted in the local identity, highlighting local raw materials and the hands of those who still craft them according to tradition.
The puccia is a simple, rustic bread made from durum wheat flour, water, salt, and yeast, enriched with the famous Leccese olivesโsmall, intensely flavored black olives typical of this part of Puglia. Once the humble meal of farmers and fishermen, the puccia has become one of Salento's most beloved specialties, served stuffed with a wide variety of ingredients.
During the festival, you can taste it in its many variations: from the classic version with olives to those stuffed with seasonal vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, and other local garden produce.
The streets and squares of the center fill with food stalls run by volunteers, where, alongside the puccia, you can find other specialties of traditional Salento peasant cuisine:
Everything is accompanied by local wine and regional products, in an atmosphere of celebration and conviviality.
True to the tradition of Apulian village festivals, the Puccia Festival is about more than just food. The evenings are brought to life by live music, featuring the rhythms of pizzica and Salento folk music that keep the crowd entertained between bites until late at night.
An ancient Messapian and Roman city, Ugento preserves a valuable historical and archaeological heritage, from the Messapian walls to the Crypt of the Crucifix. The festival is a perfect opportunity to explore the town's historic center and experience Salento hospitality in a region, Puglia, where food has always been a language of community and welcome.
The Puccia Festival of Ugento returns on July 22, 2026, in the historic center of the town in the province of Lecce. Once again this year, the festival celebrates the Salento puccia, the bread with Leccese olives, offering it in its many variations alongside other local peasant cuisine specialties.
Among the food stalls, you will be able to taste stuffed puccie, pittule, pezzetti di cavallo in sauce, maritati, and spumone, while Salento folk music will liven up the evenings. The full program with times and performances will be published by the organizers closer to the event.
Ugento is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS274 Salentina Meridionale state road. The nearest train station is in Casarano (Ferrovie del Sud Est), while the main airports are Brindisi and Bari.
Admission to the festival is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, with prices typical of local village festivals.
The event takes place in the historic center: it is best to arrive early and park in the surrounding areas. During the summer months, Ugento and its seaside area of Torre San Giovanni offer numerous accommodation options.
