About Puccia Festival

In Cocumola, a charming hamlet of Minervino di Lecce in the heart of Salento, the Puccia Festival celebrates one of the most beloved breads of the Apulian tradition. Through the village alleys, the puccia is served in many delicious variations, from grilled vegetables to local cheeses and cured meats, paired with Salento wine and craft beer. Folk music, pizzica, an artisan market, and tastings bring the evening to life, marking the start of the festivities in honor of the Madonna dell'Uragano.

The Puccia festival in the heart of Salento

Every year, at the beginning of September, the village of Cocumola — a small hamlet in the municipality of Minervino di Lecce, in the Province of Lecce — transforms into a large open-air courtyard for the Puccia Festival. The absolute star is the puccia: the typical round Salento bread, soft inside and crispy outside, which is filled and served here in dozens of different ways in front of the stone churches and houses of the historic center.

What to eat

The puccia is at the heart of every food stall and is offered according to the peasant tradition of Salento, with simple and generous pairings:

  • seasonal grilled vegetables;
  • typical Apulian cheeses and cured meats;
  • homemade pickles and preserves;
  • meatballs in sauce, tuna with capers and sun-dried tomatoes;
  • vegetarian versions and more gourmet options.

All accompanied by local wine and craft beer, in a convivial atmosphere that continues late into the evening.

Music, pizzica, and crafts

Beyond the gastronomy, the festival is enlivened by Salento folk music: pizzica bands and folk performances get the squares and alleys dancing, while an artisan market featuring local products welcomes visitors. There is also entertainment for children and dedicated tasting areas, making the event suitable for families and curious visitors of all ages.

A bond with the Madonna dell'Uragano

The Puccia Festival is not just a celebration of taste: it traditionally opens the festivities in honor of the Madonna dell'Uragano, the heart of Cocumola's religious identity. The devotion commemorates the Marian apparition of September 10, 1832, when — according to popular tradition — the Virgin protected the village from a violent typhoon (the scarcagnulo) that devastated neighboring towns. Since then, Cocumola has celebrated its Madonna every year, and the festival is the convivial moment that unites the entire community around the table before the religious celebrations.

Why it's worth it

Experiencing the Puccia Festival means discovering the most authentic Salento, that of the small inland villages where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Far from the crowded beaches, Cocumola offers a genuine experience made of simple flavors, music, hospitality, and collective memory.
