Salento's iconic round bread celebrated in Cocumola
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, at the beginning of September, the village of Cocumola — a small hamlet in the municipality of Minervino di Lecce, in the Province of Lecce — transforms into a large open-air courtyard for the Puccia Festival. The absolute star is the puccia: the typical round Salento bread, soft inside and crispy outside, which is filled and served here in dozens of different ways in front of the stone churches and houses of the historic center.
The puccia is at the heart of every food stall and is offered according to the peasant tradition of Salento, with simple and generous pairings:
All accompanied by local wine and craft beer, in a convivial atmosphere that continues late into the evening.
Beyond the gastronomy, the festival is enlivened by Salento folk music: pizzica bands and folk performances get the squares and alleys dancing, while an artisan market featuring local products welcomes visitors. There is also entertainment for children and dedicated tasting areas, making the event suitable for families and curious visitors of all ages.
The Puccia Festival is not just a celebration of taste: it traditionally opens the festivities in honor of the Madonna dell'Uragano, the heart of Cocumola's religious identity. The devotion commemorates the Marian apparition of September 10, 1832, when — according to popular tradition — the Virgin protected the village from a violent typhoon (the scarcagnulo) that devastated neighboring towns. Since then, Cocumola has celebrated its Madonna every year, and the festival is the convivial moment that unites the entire community around the table before the religious celebrations.
Experiencing the Puccia Festival means discovering the most authentic Salento, that of the small inland villages where traditions are passed down from generation to generation. Far from the crowded beaches, Cocumola offers a genuine experience made of simple flavors, music, hospitality, and collective memory.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Puccia Festival in Cocumola have not yet been announced. As per tradition, the festival is expected to take place at the beginning of September, coinciding with the start of the festivities in honor of the Madonna dell'Uragano.
The program will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event. As in past editions, visitors can expect tastings of Salento puccia in many variations, folk music with pizzica, an artisan market, and family entertainment.
The festival brings the historic center of Cocumola, a hamlet of Minervino di Lecce (LE), in lower Salento, to life.
By car from Lecce, take the SS16 and then the provincial roads towards Maglie-Otranto, exiting towards Minervino di Lecce and Cocumola (about 45 km). The nearest train station is Maglie (Ferrovie Sud Est lines), just a few kilometers away.
Free admission. Food stalls operate on a pay-per-tasting basis at affordable prices. It is recommended to arrive early to find parking in the streets surrounding the village.
