The patron saint's feast in the Franco-Provençal village of Celle di San Vito

The San Vincenzo Ferreri Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year in Celle di San Vito, a tiny municipality in the province of Foggia nestled among the woods of the Daunian Mountains in Puglia. With fewer than two hundred residents, Celle di San Vito is the least populated village in the entire region; for this very reason, the patron saint's feast becomes the moment when the community gathers in full, with the families of emigrated residents returning to the village to spend the summer.
Although San Vincenzo Ferreri is liturgically celebrated in the spring, the patronal feast in Celle di San Vito is held in mid-August: a choice linked to the summer return of emigrants, ensuring that no one has to miss the community's most important event. The celebrations are traditionally concentrated around August 13th and 14th and are part of a busy summer calendar that brings the village to life with religious moments, food festivals, and performances.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession through the streets of the historic center, preceded by Holy Mass in the Mother Church. A defining ritual is the handing over of the town's keys to the Patron Saint: a symbolic gesture that entrusts the community to the protection of San Vincenzo Ferreri, bringing the entire village together in a moment of reflection, unity, and contemplation. The religious portion is followed in the evening by a concert in the square, with folk and dance music accompanying the festivities late into the night.
Visiting the festival in Celle di San Vito means discovering one of the most unique places in Puglia. Together with the nearby town of Faeto, the village forms the so-called Daunia Arpitana, the only Franco-Provençal linguistic island in the region: here, people still speak faetar, a rare language of Franco-Provençal origin brought by settlers who arrived during the Angevin era. The patronal feast is also an opportunity to savor traditional Daunian cuisine, from handmade cicatelli to typical products of the Daunian Mountains, amidst communal tables and local hospitality.
The San Vincenzo Ferreri Patronal Feast will return in the summer of 2026 to Celle di San Vito, the smallest village in Puglia in the Daunian Mountains. As per tradition, celebrations are expected to center around mid-August, specifically the 13th and 14th, with the solemn procession, Holy Mass in the Mother Church, and the symbolic handing over of the town's keys to the Patron Saint.
At the moment, the official dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released. This page will be updated with times, religious events, and performances as soon as the Municipality and the community of Celle di San Vito publish the final calendar.
Celle di San Vito can be reached by car from the Daunian Mountains: from the Candela motorway exit (A16) or from Foggia, continue along the provincial roads of the Daunian Subappennino towards Faeto. The village is small, and the historic center is easily explored on foot.
The patronal feast has free admission and takes place largely outdoors, among the streets of the center and the square. Given the limited accommodation in the village, it is advisable to also look for lodging in the nearby Daunian Mountain towns (Faeto, Castelluccio Valmaggiore, Troia).
