About The Paputi

At the first light of Good Friday, Sarno wakes to the slow, rhythmic pace of the Paputi: hooded figures in white tunics traversing the historic center while carrying heavy wooden crosses. This is one of the oldest Easter rites in Campania, with roots dating back to the 13th century and the birth of local confraternities. Nine crosses, each identified by its own colored cord, pause before churches and sepulchers, where singers intone ancient laments on the passion and death of Christ. It is an atmosphere suspended between popular faith and collective identity.

A rite renewed at the dawn of Good Friday

In Sarno, located in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area of the province of Salerno, Holy Week is more than just a liturgical appointment: it is the moment when the entire city recognizes itself in a gesture repeated for centuries. From the first light of Good Friday until late morning, the processions of the Crosses โ€” which everyone here simply calls the Paputi โ€” wind through the streets and alleys of the historic center. Hooded men with covered faces advance at a very slow pace, carrying heavy wooden crosses on their shoulders in a local Via Crucis that evokes the ascent to Golgotha.

Local sources trace the rite back to the 13th century, when the first confraternities were founded in Sarno. There were three originally, then five, then seven by the end of the 18th century, leading to the nine crosses that still keep the tradition alive today. Each congregation departs from its own church and follows its own path, so that for hours the city is crisscrossed by processions that meet, pause, and respond to one another with song.

The nine crosses and the colors of the confraternities

All the Paputi wear white tunics, a symbol of both death and rebirth; what distinguishes them is the cincture, the cord that cinches the garment. There are two exceptions, which are the most recognizable: the Cross of San Francesco, wearing a Franciscan habit with the face uncovered, and the Cross of San Matteo, entirely in redโ€”a color that recalls the blood and suffering of Christ and, according to local tradition, commemorates the ancient primacy of the Collegiate Church.

  • San Matteo โ€” red habit and cincture
  • San Francesco โ€” Franciscan habit, hemp cord, face uncovered
  • Episcopio โ€” white with red cincture
  • San Teodoro โ€” white with dark red cincture
  • Tre Corone โ€” white with black cincture and red band
  • Immacolata โ€” white with light blue cincture
  • San Sebastiano โ€” white with white cincture and red fringe
  • Sant'Alfonso โ€” white with purple cincture
  • Sant'Alfredo โ€” long white tunic with white cincture

Each procession is led by the Grand Ceremonialist, who marks the stops and restarts by striking a metal staff: a subtle detail that, in the silence of dawn, becomes the metronome for the entire procession.

The struscio and the sepulchers of Holy Thursday

The rite actually begins the evening before. In the late afternoon of Holy Thursday, the struscio takes place: the visit to the sepulchers set up in churches, as well as in squares and along the streets, walked by shuffling one's feet as a sign of sorrow and respect. The sepulchers remain open for visits until the Friday afternoon, when the crosses return. This is the threshold that introduces the city to the atmosphere of the Passion, explaining why in Sarno one speaks of the Holy Week rites in the plural.

The singing: the most intense moment

First-time observers are struck most by the voices. The crosses stop in front of every church and sepulcher, and groups of singers intone 18th-century funeral laments, passed down orally from generation to generation. When two crosses meet, or when a cross reaches a sepulcher, the singing rises and intertwines: it is the most moving moment of the entire day, transforming a procession into a collective experience.

Sarno, the historic center and the ascent of Terravecchia

The route crosses the ancient heart of the town of Sarno and climbs, in a spiral-like path, toward the hill of Terravecchia and the Collegiate Church: a geography that the people of Sarno have always interpreted as an evocation of the journey to Calvary. From this same hill, at dawn, the red-clad Paputi of San Matteo descend, creating one of the most photographed images of Holy Week in Campania.

Why are they called "Paputi"?

Various hypotheses exist regarding the origin of the word. The most widely accepted links it to ancient Spanish, where the term referred to a demonic figure and later to the executioners' assistants, eventually coming to designate those who accompanied Christ to the crucifixion. It is no coincidence that the processions of the Spanish Semana Santa share more than one affinity with those of Sarno: a sign of the long Iberian presence in Southern Italy.

Tips for visitors

This is a rite of devotion, not a show: watch in silence, let the procession pass, and avoid obstructing the stops and the singers. Those who truly want to experience it must accept the schedule: you need to be in the center before dawn, when Sarno is still dark and the first crosses begin to move. Participation is free and open to all, along the public streets of the historic center.

The Paputi โ€” edition 2026

As every year, the Holy Week rites in Sarno are concentrated between the late afternoon of Holy Thursday, with the struscio to the sepulchers, and the dawn of Good Friday, when the nine crosses of the Paputi set out through the historic center. At the time of our check, no official schedules or detailed programs for this edition have been published: the date indicated remains therefore indicative and should be confirmed with local parishes and confraternities.

2026 Edition

The calendar of the Paputi follows the liturgical calendar: the struscio to the sepulchers in the late afternoon of Holy Thursday, and the processions of the crosses from the first light of Good Friday until late morning. The local press of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese has dedicated several in-depth reports to the Holy Week rites in Sarno in 2026 as well, a sign that the tradition continues to be widely followed in the city.

As no program with times and itineraries has been published, we do not report details here that are not documented. Those wishing to attend can contact the parishes of the town of Sarno and the confraternities, which define the routes of their respective crosses each year.
