Twelve papier-mâché statues parading through the streets of Grumo Appula

The Procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday is the most anticipated rite of Holy Week in Grumo Appula, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, on the evening of Good Friday, twelve papier-mâché sculptural groups—created between the late 18th and early 20th centuries—are carried on shoulders along Corso Umberto and through the streets of the historic center, visually recounting the Stations of the Passion of Christ.
The rites of Grumo have roots in a devotion spanning over four centuries. The organization is managed by the Good Friday Committee, under the patronage of the Santa Maria Assunta Parish and the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto. The committee, in its modern form, was founded in the late 1950s by Father Giovanni D'Erasmo, and it still coordinates the bearers, confraternities, and brass bands that bring the procession to life today.
The rites begin on the Friday of Passion, preceding Palm Sunday, with the procession of Maria Santissima Addolorata, whose image is traditionally carried on the shoulders of the town's butchers through the city streets. At the end, a group of men performs the Canto del Venerdì Santo in Piazza Kennedy.
A moment of great ethno-anthropological value is the Canto del Venerdì Santo, an ancient lament sung entirely in the Grumo dialect by a group of about twenty men during the procession. The chant narrates the Passion of Christ with poignant tones and is considered one of the community's most precious intangible heritages.
The funeral marches are entrusted to prestigious ensembles: the Gran Concerto Bandistico Città di Grumo Appula, the Bassa Musica Città di Grumo Appula, and, in some editions, the Grande Banda del Cilento, joined by the parish choir. The solemn notes accompany the slow pace of the Mysteries, creating a meditative atmosphere deeply shared by the entire citizenry.
Attending the Mysteries of Grumo Appula means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of Apulian popular religiosity, where art, faith, and collective memory merge into a rite passed down from generation to generation. An event that every Good Friday transforms the small town in the Alta Murgia of Bari into an open-air theater of devotion.
Detailed information on the 2026 edition of the Procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday in Grumo Appula has not yet been published as an official program. As per the centuries-old tradition, the Holy Week rites culminate in the procession of the twelve papier-mâché Mysteries, accompanied by local bands and the Canto del Venerdì Santo in the local dialect. For times, routes, and appointments, please refer to the channels of the Good Friday Committee and the Santa Maria Assunta parish.
Grumo Appula is located about 25 km southwest of Bari, in the Alta Murgia area. By car: take the exit from Bari along the SS96 towards Altamura.
