Good Friday in Foggia: a blend of faith and tradition
The Procession of the Mysteries is the most deeply felt and attended religious event of Good Friday in Foggia, located in the heart of the Capitanata region in Puglia. Every year, thousands of faithful fill the streets of the historic center to witness the city's Via Crucis and the ancient rite commemorating the Passion, death, and burial of Christ. It is a moment when the city unites around its religious and cultural identity, in a spirit of reflection that brings together families, confraternities, and associations.
The procession takes its name from the Mysteries, the six statues representing the stages of Jesus' Via Crucis. The simulacra emerge from the Cathedral Crypt of Foggia—the basilica of the Iconavetere, the city's patron saint alongside the Madonna of the Seven Veils—and begin their journey through the streets. On Via Arpi, the procession meets the statue of the Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), which emerges from the church of the same name. The procession then continues toward Piazza XX Settembre, where the most emotional moment takes place at the end of the Via Crucis: the poignant encounter between the Addolorata and the dead Christ, before a silent and moved crowd.
The procession winds through the streets of Foggia's historic center, following a traditional route that touches Piazza De Santis, Via Arpi, Via Fuiani, Corso Garibaldi, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Corso Cairoli, and Via Dante Alighieri, concluding in Piazza XX Settembre. Here, the Archbishop delivers the traditional message to the city and blesses the faithful with the relic of the Holy Cross. To allow for the rite, the Municipality of Foggia implements significant traffic and parking changes throughout the area each year.
Rooted in Foggia's popular devotion for over two centuries, the Procession of the Mysteries is much more than a liturgical event: it is an identity heritage passed down from generation to generation. Confraternities, families, and local associations contribute to its realization, acting as guardians of the gestures, symbols, and roles that keep a deep bond between faith, memory, and community alive. Together with the afternoon Via Crucis and the celebrations of Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday, the procession makes Foggia one of the most evocative destinations for Holy Week in Puglia.
The 2026 edition of the Procession of the Mysteries was held on Friday, April 3, 2026. The day began in the afternoon with the celebration of the Passion of the Lord in the Cathedral, accompanied by the Iconavetere Musical Chapel, followed by the city's Via Crucis with the procession of the Mysteries along the streets of the historic center.
The rite was presided over by the Archbishop of Foggia-Bovino, Monsignor Giorgio Ferretti, who addressed the city in Piazza XX Settembre with a message carrying strong social undertones: an appeal against youth violence and hurtful words, and an invitation to gentleness, forgiveness, and hospitality. In a climate of reflection, the traditional encounter between the Addolorata and the dead Christ finally took place.
