The centuries-old Good Friday rite featuring the statues of the Dead Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows
In the heart of Salento, the town of Squinzano (Province of Lecce) experiences Holy Week as one of the most intense moments of the year. The highlight is the evening of Good Friday, when the town comes to a standstill for the solemn Procession of the Dead Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows. It is a centuries-old rite, deeply rooted in the identity of the Squinzano community, which draws faithful and visitors alike through the streets of the historic center every year.
At the heart of the procession are two effigies: the Dead Christ, carried on the shoulders of confreres and the faithful, and the Virgin of Sorrows, dressed in black, her heart symbolically pierced by a sword. Together, the two statues represent the Passion of Christ and the maternal grief of Mary, in an iconography that speaks of universal suffering and hope in the Resurrection.
The procession is organized by the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows, one of the oldest in Squinzano. Its seat is the Church of the Calvary, the ancient chapel dedicated to the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which, according to historical sources, is the town's first church. The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is kept here throughout the year, and it is from this site that the Good Friday procession begins.
Starting from the Calvary, the procession winds slowly through the town's streets — via Crocefisso, Campi, Montegrappa, Cristoforo Colombo, Risorgimento, Eugenio Montale, Piazza Vittoria, Vittorio Veneto, San Francesco — until reaching the Mother Church. The rhythmic pace of the bearers is accompanied by funeral marches played by local bands, lending the evening its solemn and moving atmosphere.
The rite does not end on Friday evening. On Holy Saturday morning, the silent transfer of the statues of the Mysteries to the Calvary takes place. Finally, on Easter Sunday, in Piazza San Nicola, the Virgin of Sorrows is stripped of her black mantle and goes to meet the Risen Christ amidst applause and emotion: it is the joyful epilogue of a week that, in Squinzano, unites faith, tradition, and community.
Holy Week 2026 in Squinzano took place from March 30 to April 5, with its central moment on the evening of Good Friday, April 3. The rite once again united the entire community around the statues of the Dead Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows.
The main procession takes place on the evening of Good Friday, departing at 8:30 PM from the Church of the Calvary. The date varies each year according to the Easter calendar.
