Jazz that inhabits the square

The Priverno Jazz Festival is the summer event that has been enlivening the historic center of Priverno, a town in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio, since 2019. Created through the initiative of the Municipality of Priverno together with the Associazione Notizie dal Campo, under the artistic direction of Gianni Pucci and Walter Fantozzi, the festival has grown with each edition to become one of the most anticipated musical appointments in the Agro Pontino.

The heart of the event is Piazza Giovanni XXIII, which for three consecutive evenings turns into an open-air auditorium. The square's intimate acoustics, the illuminated facades of the village, and the audience seated even on the steps recreate that intimate atmosphere that jazz has always sought and rarely finds in overly large spaces.

A formula built on community

The hallmark of Priverno Jazz is the relationship between the territory and great music. Each edition pairs big names with the PJO – Priverno Jazz Orchestra, the big band directed by maestro Walter Fantozzi that brings together local musicians, and gives space to young instrumentalists who grew up between the town band and local music schools. It is not just a passing showcase: it is a project that gives the youth of Priverno the chance to play alongside established professionals.

In addition, there are free masterclasses held by guest masters, usually in the afternoon under the Portici Comunali. Participants do not just listen: the best students are often invited to take the stage that same evening, in a didactic formula that has become a trademark of the festival.

AperiJazz: music takes to the streets

Before each main concert, from around 8:00 PM, the historic center hosts the AperiJazz: small ensembles, duos, and trios playing in an itinerant format among small squares, bars, and courtyards. It is the most informal moment of the evening, where you can stroll with a glass in hand between sets, taste typical Lepini cuisine products, and arrive at the square already in the right mood.

Priverno, much more than a musical stop

Those who reach the festival will find a village that deserves at least a day. The medieval historic center clusters around the splendid Piazza Giovanni XXIII, dominated by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata and the 13th-century Town Hall. Just outside the town lies the archaeological area of Privernum, the ancient Roman city, and the Archaeological Museum, which usually offers special evening openings during the festival. A few kilometers away stands the Abbey of Fossanova, a masterpiece of Cistercian architecture in Italy and the place where Saint Thomas Aquinas died.
