The open-air painting day that turns San Piero a Sieve into an outdoor studio
The "Primo Lascialfari" Painting Extempore is one of the most beloved cultural events in San Piero a Sieve, a village within the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero, located in the heart of the Mugello area near Florence. For an entire day, the village turns into an open-air studio: artists of all backgrounds and ages spread out across the streets, squares, and most picturesque corners of the historic center and the surrounding countryside to paint live, right before the eyes of residents and visitors.
The event is dedicated to the memory of Primo Lascialfari and has become a landmark for painters and art lovers throughout the Mugello territory over the years. Promoted and organized by the Pro Loco of San Piero a Sieve with the patronage of the Municipality of Scarperia e San Piero, the Extempore combines a competitive spirit with a village festival atmosphere, involving local associations, schools, and artisans.
Participants have their canvases stamped in the morning and paint throughout the day, interpreting a theme chosen annually by the organizers, which relates to the village and its territory. The competition is divided into two sections:
In the afternoon, the works are submitted and displayed at the Oratorio della Compagnia, where the jury announces the winners and the awards ceremony takes place.
The day is enriched by numerous side events that bring the entire village to life:
Visiting the Extempore means discovering San Piero a Sieve in a special light, amidst easels, palettes, and the aromas of local cuisine. It is the perfect opportunity to combine art, a pleasant walk, and gastronomy in one of the most characteristic villages of the Tuscan Mugello, just a few kilometers from Florence.
The 19th edition of the "Primo Lascialfari" Painting Extempore invited painters to interpret the theme "San Piero a Sieve: Lights and Shadows of a Village", capturing the corners, atmospheres, and contrasts of the village.
The works were submitted at the Salone Mediceo (youth section 3:30 PM - 4:00 PM, adult section 4:00 PM - 4:30 PM) and displayed at the Oratorio della Compagnia, with the awards ceremony starting at 5:30 PM. The day featured the "Mercanzie in Piazza" market, terracotta demonstrations, watercolor and origami workshops for children, and the traditional tortelli lunch (12:30 PM, 10-12 euros).
In parallel, the 5th edition of the "Il Mugello for me" photo contest took place: ten selected shots were voted on, with prizes in local products for the top three finishers.
San Piero a Sieve is located in the Mugello area, about 30 km from Florence. By car, it can be reached via the SS65 della Futa road or the A1 motorway (Barberino di Mugello exit). By train, the San Piero a Sieve station is served by the Faentina line (Florence-Borgo San Lorenzo).
The event takes place on a Sunday in May, from the morning until the late afternoon awards ceremony at the Oratorio della Compagnia.
Participation in the events in the square is free and open to the public. The tortelli lunch requires payment (approximately 10-12 euros). For registration fees for the painting and photography competitions, it is recommended to contact the Pro Loco of San Piero a Sieve.
