A celebration of autumn flavors in the 'village of bread', nestled between chestnuts and the Simbruini Mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Canterano Autumn Festival is a traditional fair that brings the historic center of this small town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio, to life every November. Perched on the slopes of the Aniene Valley, at the foot of the Simbruini Mountains Regional Nature Park, Canterano is known as the 'village of bread'. During the festival, the village transforms into a journey of taste and tradition, where the aromas of seasonal cuisine mingle with the vibrant colors of autumn foliage.
The beating heart of the event is Piazza Roma, where the Canterano Pro Loco sets up its food stalls. The menu tells the story of the local autumn: starting with chestnut bread paired with local cheeses, followed by maltagliati with beans and crumbled DOP chestnuts, grilled arrosticini, and the essential roasted chestnuts served with a glass of mulled wine. To finish, traditional desserts include Mont Blanc, lemon tarts, and meringues.
The Autumn Festival is more than just a food and wine event. Tastings are accompanied by music echoing through the alleys, while the village opens its treasures to visitors: the Church of San Mauro, historic caves, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Simbruini Mountains. It is the perfect opportunity for an autumn day trip to discover the 'simple beauty of time passing slowly'.
Just over an hour from Rome, Canterano offers visitors the authentic atmosphere of the small villages of the Aniene Valley. The Autumn Festival is an invitation to slow down, savor the genuine flavors of the rural Lazio tradition, and be captivated by the landscape of the Simbruini Mountains at their most evocative. A family-friendly event that celebrates the local territory and its excellence.
The 2026 edition of the Canterano Autumn Festival has not yet been officially announced. Based on previous years, the event is generally held in early November in Piazza Roma, featuring food stalls from the Pro Loco dedicated to autumn flavors: chestnuts, roasted chestnuts, maltagliati with beans, and typical products from the Aniene region.
The detailed program, including times and menus, will be available in the weeks leading up to the event. For updates, we recommend following the channels of the Pro Loco of Canterano.
By car from Rome: take the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, exit at Vicovaro-Mandela, then follow the signs for the Aniene Valley until you reach Canterano (about 60 km from the capital). The village is reached via the provincial road that climbs the valley.
Saturday from 5:00 PM (dinner); Sunday from 12:00 PM (lunch).
