Two days of backcountry gravel riding in the Monti della Luna, Cesana Torinese
The Portage Bike Festival debuts in 2026, positioning itself as a refreshing departure from typical gravel events. The organizers' slogan, "(not) just another Gravel gathering," perfectly captures the spirit of the event: it is not a timed granfondo, but a backcountry cycling experience that prioritizes adventure, exploration, and a deep connection with the mountains. The festival takes place on the slopes of the Monti della Luna, the massif overlooking the upper Susa Valley on the French border, in a high-altitude landscape of alpine meadows, mountain lakes, and ancient military mule tracks.
The event headquarters is the Rifugio Capanna Mautino, located at Lago Nero, above the village of Bousson, in the municipality of Cesana Torinese, in the Province of Turin. This serves as the start and finish point for gravel routes winding through the trails of the Monti della Luna, one of the most evocative areas in the Piedmont Alps for off-road cycling. The mountain hut acts as a logistics base, refreshment point, and social hub for participants, fostering the convivial atmosphere typical of the gravel community.
Backcountry is the festival's hallmark: riding far from asphalt and traffic on mixed terrain and natural tracks, favoring territorial discovery over pure competitive performance. It is a format designed for those who love two-wheeled adventure, the rewarding challenge of high-altitude climbs, and the satisfaction of reaching remote corners of the Alps. The event is organized by the Rifugio Capanna Mautino team in collaboration with the Workless Collective and Patatrack, groups deeply rooted in the culture of exploratory cycling.
Cesana Torinese is a mountain destination best known as a ski hub in the Via Lattea area, but in summer, it transforms into a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts: hiking, trail running, and gravel cycling find their ideal terrain here. The Portage Bike Festival embraces this summer vocation, bringing a fresh, growing event to high altitudes that highlights the trails of the Monti della Luna and the natural heritage of this corner of Piedmont.
The Portage Bike Festival 2026 inaugurates the event with two days dedicated to high-altitude gravel cycling on June 27 and 28, 2026. The rally is based at the Rifugio Capanna Mautino, in the Lago Nero area of Bousson (Cesana Torinese), from which the backcountry routes of the Monti della Luna unfold. The event is organized by the refuge team together with Workless Collective and Patatrack. Registration is available online via the Patatrack platform.
The detailed program for the edition, including schedules, routes, and planned activities, will be communicated by the organizers on official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
As this is the first edition, the detailed program with daily schedules, gravel routes in the Monti della Luna, and side activities will be published by the organizers on official channels (Capanna Mautino website and Patatrack platform) as the event approaches. The planned format includes two days of backcountry riding with the Rifugio Capanna Mautino as a base and social gatherings at the hut.
Cesana Torinese can be reached by car from Turin via the SS24 Monginevro road (approx. 90 km). The hamlet of Bousson and the Rifugio Capanna Mautino at Lago Nero are located at high altitude; the final stretches are unpaved mountain roads that should be driven with care. By train, the reference station is Oulx-Cesana-Claviere-Sestriere, which is connected by local buses.
Registration for the festival is handled online via the Patatrack platform (patatrack.cc/portage-bike-festival). It is recommended to register in advance due to the logistical nature of this high-altitude event.
As this is a high-mountain gravel event, a well-maintained off-road bike, technical layered clothing, and repair equipment are essential. High-altitude weather can change rapidly: bring a rain jacket and plenty of water.
