About Polentone Festival

Every January, the village of Orvinio, nestled in the heart of the Lucretili Mountains in the province of Rieti, gathers around large copper cauldrons for the Polentone Festival. The polenta is slow-cooked, spread on a marble slab, sliced with a wire, and topped with wild chicory, pork ribs, pancetta, and sausage. The local Pro Loco sets up heated, covered stands, while the historic center comes alive with artisan stalls: a festive day that warms up the Sabina winter.

A winter tradition in Sabina

The Polentone Festival is the event that kicks off the year in the calendar of Orvinio, a small village in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region. Located within the Lucretili Mountains at an altitude of over 800 meters, the village sits in a valley that can be cold and misty in winter: this is precisely why the event feels like a collective ritual, bringing residents and hikers together over a hearty, rustic dish.

What is a polentone?

A polentone is not just a large portion of polenta. As noted by the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park, it is distinguished by its longer cooking time and a denser, firmer consistency. After hours of work in large copper cauldrons, the steaming mass is turned out onto a marble slab, left to firm up, and then sliced with a wire into even portions, following a technique passed down through generations in Orvinio.

The topping is classic Sabina peasant cuisine: sautéed wild chicory, pork ribs, pancetta, and sausage, often made with locally raised pork. Everything is served with water and local wine, a pairing as simple as it is effective.

How the day unfolds

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Orvinio, which has been handling every detail of the festival for over forty years. The food stand opens around noon and remains active until portions run out, while artisan stalls and local product vendors line the historic center. Over the years, the Pro Loco has set up covered and heated structures, ensuring that lunch can be enjoyed comfortably even in the event of rain or freezing temperatures.

A village worth visiting

Visitors to Orvinio find more than just a great meal. The village is dominated by the Malvezzi-Campeggi Castle, visible from afar above the stone houses, and is crisscrossed by narrow alleys and stairways that tell the story of its medieval origins. Nearby, the trails of the Lucretili Mountains Park are popular even in the cold season: many visitors combine the festival with a short morning hike.

The date: between Epiphany and late January

The Polentone Festival is traditionally held in January. In several years, it has been scheduled for January 6th, coinciding with the Epiphany and the arrival of the Befana in the square; in other editions, such as in 2026, the Pro Loco chose a Sunday at the end of the month. It is therefore advisable to check the exact date each year on the association's official channels before traveling.

Why it's worth going

  • A traditional dish still prepared in copper cauldrons and sliced with a wire in front of the public.
  • Free admission and affordable prices, in the true spirit of a village festival.
  • An authentic mountain village, far from mass tourism circuits.
  • The opportunity to combine the day with a walk in the Lucretili Mountains.
  • A chance to discover the winter cuisine of the Rieti Sabina area.

Polentone Festival — edition 2026

The 44th edition of the Polentone Festival took place on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Orvinio, in the province of Rieti. The Pro Loco opened the food stand at noon, serving polentone topped with chicory, pork ribs, pancetta, and sausage, accompanied by water and wine. For the occasion, covered seating was provided, allowing guests to dine comfortably even in the cold of late January.

The 44th edition

In 2026, the Polentone Festival of Orvinio changed its schedule compared to the years linked to the Epiphany: the Pro Loco chose Sunday, January 25th, a date that allowed many visitors from the province of Rieti and the Rome area to reach the village in the Lucretili Mountains for the entire day.

The white smoke rising from the cauldrons marked the start of the festivities as always. From 12:00 PM, the food stand distributed portions of polentone, sliced with a wire and seasoned according to the traditional recipe with wild chicory, pork ribs, pancetta, and sausage. Service continued throughout the afternoon until portions ran out.

Environment and hospitality

As in previous editions, the organization provided covered structures with tables and chairs, a solution that has become essential for an event held in the coldest month of the year. The historic center also featured stalls selling local handicrafts and typical products.
