The Polentata of Pedesina
Perched on the slopes of Valgerola, in the province of Sondrio, Pedesina is the smallest municipality in Italy by population: a few dozen residents who, every summer, keep a dense network of events alive thanks to the local Pro Loco. The Polentata is one of these: a mid-summer lunch organised by the Pro Loco of Pedesina, where polenta slowly cooked in traditional cauldrons becomes an excuse to gather.
The event is held at the end of August, usually around midday, and is the classic village gathering: shared tables, the fresh mountain air, and that sense of community that survives better in small mountain villages than elsewhere. For those holidaying in Valtellina or hiking the trails of Valgerola, it's an opportunity to stop and taste the simple flavours of the Alps.
