About Polenta Festival

Every November, Rocca Massima, the highest town in the province of Latina, gathers around the steaming cauldrons of the Polenta Festival. In the historic center overlooking the Agro Pontino, the La Castagna Association serves polenta topped with sausage, spare ribs, and broccoli rabe, accompanied by water and wine. Two days of long communal tables in the square, craft markets, traditional folk songs, and popular music: a raw and sincere celebration that tells the story of Lazio's mountain cuisine without any frills.

An autumn festival in the Lepini Mountains

Perched at an altitude of approximately 735 meters, Rocca Massima is the highest municipality in the province of Latina and one of the most striking natural balconies in Lazio: from the village's viewpoint, the gaze sweeps across the Agro Pontino to the sea and, on clear days, to the Pontine Islands. It is here, among stone alleys and the remains of the medieval Annibaldi fortress, that the Polenta Festival takes place every November, now a permanent fixture in the Lepini autumn calendar.

Polenta as an identity dish

It may be surprising to find polenta so far south, but in the mountain villages of Lazio, it has always been a humble and nutritious dish, cooked during the cold months when work in the fields and chestnut groves becomes more demanding. The festival offers a unique and intentionally simple recipe, without long menus: polenta with sausage, pork ribs, and broccoli rabe, served steaming hot on plates, with water and wine included. Those who prefer can request the version with seasonal vegetables only.

  • Polenta topped with sausage and spare ribs
  • Sautéed broccoli rabe, a typical local side dish
  • Water and wine included in the price of the single-course meal
  • Communal table service, booking recommended

The role of the La Castagna Association

The event is organized by the La Castagna Association of Rocca Massima, the same group that enlivens the village's social life and works year-round to promote local products, from chestnuts to the olive oil of the Lepini Mountains. Volunteers are the ones stirring the cauldrons, setting the tables, and welcoming visitors: a collective effort that gives the festival a familiar character, far removed from large commercial fairs.

Popular music, folk songs, and markets

The gastronomic experience is accompanied by a series of events that mark the two days. On Saturday afternoon, the historic center comes alive with Roman and Lazio folk music; on Sunday morning, the craft and local producer market opens, while lunch in the square is enlivened by stornellatori (traditional folk singers), who move from table to table with accordions and guitars. In recent editions, the festival has also hosted gatherings of Fiat 500s and vintage cars, which drive in a procession along the hairpin bends up to the viewpoint.

What to see in the village

The festival is the perfect opportunity to discover a village with only a few hundred inhabitants that can be visited entirely on foot in a short time. The parish church, the remains of the medieval fortifications, and above all the belvedere, which offers one of the widest panoramas on the north-western side of the Lepini, are well worth a stop. Nearby, trails lead to Monte Lupone, which is very popular with hikers even in autumn, when the beech forests turn colorful.

An event that has grown year after year

Born in the early 2020s, the Polenta Festival has grown rapidly: from the third edition in 2023, which was still concentrated on a single Sunday, it has moved to a two-day format, with a Saturday dinner and a Sunday lunch. The 2025 edition, the fifth, took place on November 22nd and 23rd and confirmed the fixed-price single-course formula, with table reservations made by phone.

Why it's worth the trip

In a region like Lazio, where autumn brings a multitude of festivals and celebrations of local products, Rocca Massima stands out for the human scale of the event, the panorama, and the authenticity of the cuisine offered. It is a true village festival, where you can eat well for little money and chat with those who cook: the ideal destination for a day trip from Rome, Latina, or the Castelli Romani.

Polenta Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Rocca Massima Polenta Festival has not yet been officially announced. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to return over a weekend in November in the village's historic center, featuring the usual topped polenta, craft market, and popular music. The dates indicated are tentative and should be verified with the La Castagna Association.

The Polenta Festival in Rocca Massima, in the province of Latina, is expected to return in 2026 over a weekend in November, as in previous editions. At the time of writing, the La Castagna Association has not yet released the official calendar.

If the proven formula is confirmed, the festival will take place over two days: Saturday afternoon/evening dinner and Sunday lunch in the square, with the exhibition market open in the morning. The dish offered remains polenta with sausage, spare ribs, and broccoli rabe, served at a fixed price with water and wine.
