About Christmas in Genazzano

From the beginning of December until Epiphany, Genazzano transforms into a widespread Christmas village. The Municipality, together with local associations, offers markets, theatrical and musical performances, workshops for children, tastings of local products, religious events, and charity initiatives. The heart of the event is the Castello Colonna, which hosts Santa's Village, but the entire historic center—squares, the Teatro Cinema Italia, and the Municipal Library—participates in the celebration with a calendar designed especially for families.

Christmas in the Prenestini village

Christmas in Genazzano is the Christmas program of the Municipality of Genazzano, a village in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital overlooking the Sacco Valley, in the heart of the Prenestini Mountains, in Lazio. It is not a single event but a widespread program that spans about a month, from the first days of December until January 6th, involving squares, churches, the municipal theater, the library, and above all the town's symbolic monument: the Castello Colonna.

Castello Colonna, the festival headquarters

The Colonna fortress, which dominates the town with its medieval bulk later remodeled in the Renaissance era, is the place around which a large part of the calendar revolves. The Santa's Village is set up here, with entertainment, baby dance, letters, magic shows, and puppets: a setup designed for children that, on peak days, opens in the late afternoon and accompanies families until the evening. Also within the castle spaces are agri-food markets with typical products from the Prenestini area and creative workshops for the little ones. On January 6th, the same setting hosts the arrival of the Befana, an appointment that symbolically closes the festivities.

Markets, music, and theater

In the squares of the historic center, Christmas markets are set up with crafts, decorations, sweets, and gift ideas. The program alternates between different genres and audiences:

  • Theatrical and musical performances at the Teatro Cinema Italia and in the town's churches, with concerts and Christmas carols;
  • Workshops for children and recreational activities managed by local associations;
  • Tombolata (bingo), also in dialect, an appointment that remains one of the most participated and identity-defining moments;
  • Tastings of typical products, with proposals linked to craft beer and local wines;
  • Tree lighting and the setting up of illuminations, which mark the opening of the festive period;
  • Conferences, exhibitions, and presentations at the Municipal Library;
  • Vintage car gatherings and impromptu initiatives proposed by associations.

A community celebration

What characterizes the Genazzano Christmas is its choral dimension: alongside the events organized by the Municipal Administration, the calendar gathers proposals from parishes, the Pro Loco, cultural and sports associations, and schools. There is no shortage of charity initiatives, with collections and moments of benevolence, which give the program a character closer to a village festival than a tourist showcase. Most of the appointments have free admission, although some shows and tastings may require a contribution or reservation.

Genazzano beyond Christmas

Genazzano is not just any village in Lazio: linked to the Colonna family and Pope Martin V, it preserves the famous sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, a pilgrimage destination, and hosts the Historic Genazzano Carnival during the year. Visiting the town during the holidays therefore means finding, in addition to the Christmas program, a compact and well-preserved historic center, made of alleys, arches, and stairways, just over forty kilometers from Rome.

Who is it for?

The program is primarily designed for families with children, thanks to Santa's Village and the workshops, but it also offers ideas for those looking for a Sunday trip out of town near the capital: markets, good food, and the possibility of visiting the castle in a festive guise.

Christmas in Genazzano — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Christmas in Genazzano has not yet been officially announced. The Municipality usually publishes the complete program between the end of November and the first days of December, with the festivities opening around the lighting of the tree and closing on January 6th with the Befana at Castello Colonna. The dates indicated here are therefore indicative and must be verified on the official channels of the Municipality of Genazzano.

The detailed program for the 2026 edition is not yet available. As in previous years, a widespread program is expected between the Castello Colonna, the historic center, the Teatro Cinema Italia, and the Municipal Library, with markets, Santa's Village, shows, workshops for children, and charity initiatives. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Genazzano releases the official calendar.
