The Barba Pero and Magna Danda masks and the allegorical float parades in the heart of Poirino
The Poirino Carnival is one of the most cherished events of the year for the community of Poirino, a lively town in the Province of Turin, nestled in the Pianalto area among the hills of Piedmont. For four days, the historic center and the central Piazza Italia transform into a stage of colors, confetti, and joy, attracting families, children, and masked groups from all over the surrounding area.
At the heart of the Poirino tradition are the two typical masks, Barba Pero and Magna Danda, popular figures portrayed each year by a local couple. During the inaugural procession, they are symbolically presented with the keys to the town: for a few days, they lead the celebration, bringing smiles even to nursing homes and the elderly, in a gesture that renews the bond between the event and the entire community.
The most anticipated moment is the allegorical float parade, which takes place in two sessions: the Sunday afternoon event, dedicated to families, and the spectacular Shrove Tuesday night parade, when the city streets light up with a display of lights, music, and colors. The processions feature numerous groups and floats from neighboring towns, including Racconigi, Piobesi, Chieri, Nichelino, Carmagnola, Villafalletto, Volpiano, Pralormo, and Vigone, the latter featuring its majorettes.
The gastronomic dimension is not to be missed: in Piazza Italia, the Poirino Alpini Group distributes traditional bugie and hot drinks, while the Pro Loco enlivens the festivities with refreshment points, carnival dinners, and musical evenings. The Poirino Philharmonic accompanies the processions with its band, setting the rhythm for the party.
More than just a simple masquerade, the Poirino Carnival is an opportunity for the entire community of the Municipality of Poirino and south-eastern Piedmont to come together. Popular traditions, folklore, the participation of youth groups such as the 'leve' and parish youth clubs, and the closing bonfire make this event an authentic and beloved appointment, capable of renewing the joy of the town streets every year.
The 2026 edition brought Poirino to life from February 14 to 17, with Francesco Burzio and Michela Marino in the roles of Barba Pero and Magna Danda. Festivities, allegorical float parades, and many initiatives for families and children filled Piazza Italia and the historic center.
Poirino is located in the Province of Turin, along the route between Chieri and Carmagnola. By car, it can be reached via the SP122 and the provincial roads of the Pianalto; by train, it is served by the Poirino station on the TurinโChivassoโAlessandria line. The events take place in the historic center and in Piazza Italia.
The Carnival takes place during the Carnival period, between the weekend of the Saturday and Shrove Tuesday (February).
Parades and festivities in the square are free to attend. Dinners, lunches with the masks, and evening events in venues are paid and require reservation.
