Pizzica nei Vicoli is an event that brings folk music and dance back to the streets of the historic center of Pulsano, a small town in the province of Taranto, Apulia. Established in 2024, the evening is organized by the Pro Loco of Pulsano with the support of the national UNPLI and takes place in conjunction with the European Music Day, the annual celebration held around June 21st that honors music in all its forms across the continent.
As dusk falls, the village's characteristic alleys transform into a sprawling stage: the notes of traditional Apulian tambourines, accordions, and guitars resonate against the ancient walls, while visitors are swept away by the driving rhythm of the pizzica. The event is free to attend and highly participatory, with residents and tourists alike joining the dancers in spontaneous circles.
The cultural heart of the event is the Pro Loco's pizzica school, which trains dozens of enthusiasts in traditional dance throughout the year. The evening serves as the grand finale of the training course, where students perform for the community alongside local musical groups. Past editions have featured the band Primitivo Trad, known for their popular sounds and infectious energy.
Beyond the music, Pizzica nei Vicoli offers space for cultural reflection on the value of pizzica as an intangible heritage of Apulia, with contributions from scholars and folk tradition enthusiasts. The event is part of Pulsano's summer calendar and often serves as a prelude to other local highlights, such as the T-Fest – Typical Products Festival, dedicated to local gastronomy and traditions.
Located just a few kilometers from the Ionian Sea, the Town of Pulsano is known for its coastline and its intimate, evocative historic center, providing the perfect backdrop for a festival that weaves together music, memory, and conviviality. Today, Pizzica nei Vicoli is one of the events that best captures the folk soul of this corner of the Ionian province of Taranto.
