The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. della Fontana is the most cherished event of the year for Francavilla Fontana, a city in the province of Brindisi, in the heart of the Messapian Puglia region. Every September, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, the Madonna della Fontana, in a long calendar of events that weaves together devotion, tradition, culture, and entertainment. The celebrations span several days and culminate on September 14th, the solemn day dedicated to the Virgin.
The cult is rooted in a legend that popular tradition dates back to September 14, 1310: during a hunting trip, Prince Philip of Anjou's men shot an arrow at a doe drinking from a spring, but the arrow miraculously flew back. At that very spot, the image of the Madonna and Child, the Madonna della Fontana, was discovered and subsequently adopted as the city's protector. The ancient icon, a Virgin Hodegetria, is still jealously guarded in a chapel of the Collegiate Church of the Most Holy Rosary. In the local Francavilla dialect, the patron saint is known as the "Matonna Tì La Funtana".
The religious journey begins with the Quindicina (fifteen days of prayer) and continues with the enthronement of the statue and the Novenario, marked at dawn by traditional "dark shots." On the day of the feast, Eucharistic celebrations follow one another, leading up to the solemn Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of Oria. In the afternoon, after the floral tribute in Piazza Umberto I and the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the Madonna, the solemn procession winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the "Giuseppe Verdi" Musical Association of Francavilla Fontana.
Between the sacred and the profane, the Feast of the Madonna della Fontana is much more than a religious recurrence: it is the very identity of Francavilla Fontana, which lights up its squares for a few days, drawing back emigrants and visitors from across the province of Brindisi and the entire Salento area.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Maria SS. della Fontana has not yet been officially announced. The Patronal Feast Committee of Maria SS. della Fontana typically publishes the dates and full program in the weeks leading up to the event.
In keeping with tradition, the festivities will focus around September 14th, the patronal feast day, featuring the Quindicina, the Novenario, the solemn procession through the historic center, brass band concerts in the bandstand, shows in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, and the concluding fireworks. The detailed program will be published on the official website and the Committee's social media channels.
Francavilla Fontana is served by the railway station on the Taranto-Brindisi line and is accessible by car via the SS7 ter road. The nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento, located approximately 30 km away.
Events animate the historic center, with Piazza Umberto I, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Castello Imperiali, and Piazza Giovanni XXIII serving as the main venues for concerts and shows.
All patronal feast events, including religious celebrations and concerts in the square, are held outdoors and are free of charge.
