A month of historical traditions along the Arno riverbanks in Pisa
Pisan June is the most significant city-wide event in the Tuscan capital. Throughout the entire month of June, the Municipality of Pisa organizes a packed schedule of historical, cultural, and sporting events centered around the celebrations for San Ranieri, the city's patron saint. The banks of the Arno, the palaces along the Lungarni, and the bridges of the historic center serve as the natural stage for centuries-old re-enactments that draw tens of thousands of locals and visitors from across Italy every year.
The heart of Pisan June consists of four main events that structure the month:
Alongside the main highlights, Pisan June offers a rich program of local initiatives: the evening opening of city churches with Open Churches by night, guided tours of Romanesque heritage, photography exhibitions, literary festivals, concerts, international chess tournaments, and sporting competitions on the Arno such as canoe and kayak races. It is a multidisciplinary festival that weaves together historical memory, culture, and community life.
The re-enactments of Pisan June have roots stretching back centuries and safeguard the identity of a city that was once a major Mediterranean maritime power. The historical costumes—the result of constant restoration and renewal by the Municipality of Pisa—the district flags, and the unique atmosphere of the illuminated Lungarni make Pisan June an unmissable event for anyone visiting the province of Pisa and Tuscany during the summer.
Pisan June 2026 opens on Tuesday, June 2nd with the 71st Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, returning to Pisa with its historical costume pageant and the rowing challenge between Pisa, Genoa, Amalfi, and Venice. The highlights are the Luminara of San Ranieri on Tuesday, June 16th, with over one hundred thousand candles lit along the Lungarni, the San Ranieri Palio on Wednesday, June 17th (the patron saint's day), and the Bridge Game on Saturday, June 27th.
The program is completed by Open Churches by night with tours of Romanesque heritage, photo exhibitions, literary events, an international chess tournament, and sporting competitions on the Arno. All main events are free to attend.
Pisa is easily accessible by train (Pisa Centrale station), by car via the A11 motorway and the FI-PI-LI expressway, and by plane thanks to the Galileo Galilei International Airport, located just minutes from the center. The Pisan June events take place in the historic center, along the Lungarni, and on the bridges over the Arno.
All main events are free to attend. For the Luminara and the Bridge Game, we recommend arriving well in advance to secure a spot along the banks of the Arno and following the Municipality's guidelines regarding traffic and safety measures in the historic center.
