The decentralized carnival bringing masks, music, and sweets to the districts of Pisa
The Pisa Neighborhood Carnival was born from a clear vision: to bring the celebration not to a single monumental square, but directly into the city's neighborhoods where families live. Organized by the Municipality of Pisa in collaboration with Pisamo, the initiative transforms squares and open spaces in the suburbs into small, child-friendly stages, featuring afternoons of entertainment, music, and costumed fun.
The beauty of this event lies in its decentralized nature: each appointment takes place in a different neighborhood of the Tuscan capital, in the province of Pisa. It starts in the La Cella area, moving through Cep, San Giusto-San Marco, the coastal hamlet of Marina di Pisa, and the Riglione-Oratoio area, culminating in a special event in the heart of the historic center. It is a way to enliven neighborhood bonds and offer families a festive occasion just a few steps from home.
The municipal administration has repeatedly emphasized how initiatives of this kind represent an opportunity to rediscover the spirit of community and strengthen social ties, following the success of Christmas initiatives. It is not a large, spectacular carnival with floats, but a network of neighborhood parties designed for children, families, and the daily life of Pisa's districts.
For 2026, the Municipality of Pisa, in collaboration with Pisamo, proposed six afternoons of decentralized festivities in the city's neighborhoods, all running from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM with free admission. A format designed to bring the Carnival directly to the districts, with entertainment for children and families.
All events took place from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, featuring entertainment, face painting, masks, music, and traditional sweets for children and families.
The grand finale on Shrove Tuesday in Riglione-Oratoio and the special event on February 21 in Piazza delle Vettovaglie, in the heart of the historic center, closed the festival, bringing the celebration into the city center as well.
In the first half of February, with afternoon events from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, spread across multiple dates and different neighborhoods of the city.
In the squares and public spaces of Pisa's neighborhoods (La Cella, Cep, San Giusto-San Marco, Marina di Pisa, Riglione-Oratoio) and in the historic center. Each date has a dedicated location.
All events are free and open to children and families.
Pisa is well-connected by train (Pisa Centrale station) and by car (A11/A12 motorway, FI-PI-LI junction). Individual events can be easily reached by public transport or on foot within their respective neighborhoods.
