The pine nut festival in the Pineta di Classe at Fosso Ghiaia
The Pine Nut Festival is one of the most cherished spring festivals in the Ravenna area, in Emilia-Romagna. It takes place in Fosso Ghiaia, a hamlet nestled within the famous Pineta di Classe (Class Pine Forest), inside the Parco 1° Maggio (May 1st Park). The event, organized by the Fosso Ghiaia Citizens' Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Ravenna, pays homage to a pine forest product that has characterized the local economy and cuisine for centuries.
The pine nut is a typical product of the Ravenna area, known for centuries for its culinary and health benefits. Since the Middle Ages, harvesting pine cones was an important activity for the city: the cones were spread out in courtyards and beaten to release the pine nuts using the heat of the sun or controlled fires. The festival celebrates this heritage with food stalls offering dishes from the Romagnola tradition and pine nut specialties.
The event spans two weekends, between late April and the first few days of May. The food stalls open daily from noon, with dining service available for lunch and dinner. The program includes:
Set amidst the greenery of the pine forest, the Pine Nut Festival is a free, family-friendly event, perfect for spending a day outdoors just a few kilometers from the center of Ravenna and the Adriatic coast. The natural setting of Parco 1° Maggio, among the centuries-old pine trees of the Pineta di Classe, makes the event an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Romagna, combining taste, nature, and conviviality.
The 30th edition of the Pine Nut Festival was held at Parco 1° Maggio in Fosso Ghiaia (Ravenna) on April 25 and 26 and from May 1 to 3, 2026, celebrating thirty years of the event.
The food stalls, open daily from 12:00 PM, offered traditional Romagnola dishes and pine nut specialties. The program included attractions and recreational activities for families, entertainment for children, and on May 2 and 3, the 'Sport in Festa' event in collaboration with CSRC Portuali Ravenna. Free admission.
