The summer festival celebrating fried frog in the heart of Valdambra
The Pietraviva Frog Festival is one of the most distinctive summer culinary events in the province of Arezzo. It takes place every year during the second week of July in the small village of Pietraviva, a hamlet of the municipality of Bucine, nestled in the hills of the Valdambra—a green strip of eastern Tuscany halfway between the Valdarno and the Chianti area of Arezzo. Organized with passion by the Pro Loco Pietraviva, the event transforms the village streets and square into a large, convivial outdoor space for several evenings.
The festival's signature dish is fried frog, a legacy of the local peasant "cucina povera." Frogs once thrived in the ditches and fields around Pietraviva, and many traditional local dishes made extensive use of them: soups, stewed frogs, savory pies, and, of course, the fried legs, which are floured, dipped in egg and breadcrumbs, and golden-fried in hot oil. Alongside the specialty that gives the festival its name, the food stalls offer first courses, grilled meats, traditional desserts, and a selection of local wines from the Arezzo area. There is also a pizzeria, which is very popular with families.
The food stalls open every evening, welcoming visitors in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. Each night is enlivened by live music, dance evenings with orchestras and bands, DJ sets, and moments of pure entertainment that continue late into the night. Throughout the festival, numerous sports and recreational activities take place: the five-a-side football tournament with its finals, a running race, and the traditional Vespa rally, which has become a classic event eagerly awaited by enthusiasts from across the region.
Now half a century old, the Frog Festival is much more than just a culinary event: it is a gathering point for the entire Pietraviva community and an opportunity to introduce visitors to the flavors and hospitality of the Valdambra. Every year, the festival attracts many food lovers and curious visitors from neighboring towns and the entire province of Arezzo, drawn by an unusual culinary offering and the authenticity of a true village festival, organized entirely by Pro Loco volunteers.
The festival is held in the center of Pietraviva, along Via della Repubblica and in the village squares, in the heart of the municipality of Bucine, in Tuscany. Admission to the event is free. It is an ideal experience for those who want to discover the Valdambra in summer, combining the festival with a walk through the villages and countryside of this lesser-known and evocative corner of the Arezzo province.
The 2026 Pietraviva Frog Festival will be held from Thursday, July 9 to Sunday, July 12, 2026, in the center of Pietraviva (Municipality of Bucine, province of Arezzo). The food stalls and pizzeria will open every evening with the house specialty, fried frog, accompanied by first courses, grilled meats, and local wines.
As per tradition, the evenings will be enlivened by live music, dance nights, and entertainment, while the festival days will see the return of the sports and recreational activities typical of the event, including the five-a-side football tournament, the running race, and the Vespa rally. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including times and artists for each evening, will be published by the Pro Loco Pietraviva in the weeks leading up to the event. Admission is free.
