Masks, shows, and children's workshops among the historic locomotives of the Pietrarsa Museum
The Pietrarsa National Railway Museum, overlooking the Gulf of Naples in the town of Portici, is one of the most original settings to experience Carnival in Campania. Every year, between late February and early March, the pavilions housing 19th-century steam locomotives fill with confetti, costumes, music, and masked children: the Pietrarsa Carnival Festival is now a highly anticipated event for families from the Vesuvius area and the entire metropolitan city of Naples.
The museum stands where Ferdinand II of Bourbon established the Royal Bourbon Factory of Pietrarsa in 1840, the first major mechanical plant in the peninsula, built along the route of the first Italian railway - the Naples-Portici line, inaugurated on October 3, 1839. From 1845, steam locomotives were built there, and by 1853, the plant employed about seven hundred workers. It closed its doors in 1975 and became a museum in 1989, reopening in 2007 after extensive restoration. Today, it is managed by the Fondazione FS Italiane and welcomes over two hundred thousand visitors a year.
It is precisely this dual soul - industrial archaeology and Bourbon memory - that makes the Pietrarsa Carnival different from any other: masked children run among machines that made transport history, while actors and entertainers transform the squares and halls into a large open-air and indoor stage.
The format is never the same. In 2023, the museum hosted the Grand Fairy Tale Ball and the Grand Wizards' Ball, two days dedicated to princesses, knights, and apprentice sorcerers. In 2025, it was the turn of At Court with Ferdinand II, featuring the arrival of the sovereign, narrated tours in period costumes, and the Grand 19th-Century Ball. In 2026, the baton passed to the Fabulae - Teatro per bambini company, which brought the show The Carnival Festival to the historic carriages, featuring Harlequin, Pulcinella, Colombina, and Balanzone.
However, the common thread remains the same: a child-friendly Carnival designed to bridge play with the discovery of heritage. Those who arrive for the show almost always end up staying to visit the museum, and vice versa.
The event is primarily aimed at families with preschool and primary school children, but the formula also appeals to adults passionate about railway history and re-enactments: the costume tours and 19th-century dances have a loyal following. The facility is spacious, largely covered, and accessible, making the day manageable even with a stroller or in case of bad weather - a non-trivial detail for a festival that falls in the middle of winter.
In Campania, Carnival is a busy season: from the float parades in the Vesuvius towns to neighborhood parties in the capital, and historical re-enactments in the villas of the Golden Mile. In Portici, a city that preserves a very strong Bourbon identity with its Royal Palace and Vesuvius Villas, the Pietrarsa event naturally fits into this calendar, adding an ingredient that no one else can offer: a Carnival celebrated inside the cradle of Italian railways.
For the 2026 Carnival, the Pietrarsa National Railway Museum hosted a production by Fabulae - Teatro per bambini, the section dedicated to childhood born from the meeting between the management experience of the M&N's company and the artistic research of the Teatro Bellavista.
The show, overtly pedagogical as well as comedic, used the universal language of the Commedia dell'Arte to talk to children about collaboration and friendship. The Fabulae project, the organizers explain, aims to transform spectators from passive observers into active protagonists, accompanying the performances with experiential workshops designed to stimulate creativity, imagination, and civic sense.
The itinerant formula allowed for the use of the spaces of the Portici museum: the masks moved among the locomotives and royal carriages, and the audience followed them from pavilion to pavilion. A choice that also made the Carnival morning an opportunity for a visit for many families in the province of Naples.
The story takes place in the large 18th-century palace of Mr. Balanzone, bustling with preparations for a sumptuous Carnival lunch. Coordinating the operations are his historic servants, Arlecchino and Pulcinella, a pair capable of turning every task into a hilarious chain of trouble. The arrival of the new maid Colombina, called to restore order, triggers a whirlwind of jokes, physical gags, and misunderstandings that ends with a message of peace, friendship, and collaboration.
The language chosen by the company is rhythmic and visual, tailored for children. Alongside the performances, the Fabulae project offers experiential workshops that directly involve the young audience.

Children's shows have limited seating: it is advisable to book a few days in advance. The outdoor square is exposed to the gulf wind, so it is better to dress in layers. Inside, there are a bistro, pizzeria, and café, useful for lunch without having to leave.
