About Saint Gaetano Errico

In Secondigliano, a district in the northern area of Naples, the Saint Gaetano Errico Festival celebrates the priest who was born and died here in the 19th century, founder of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. The heart of the festival is the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata on Via Dante Alighieri, the church the saint wished to build and where his remains rest today. The event marks the end of the calendar of Patronal Festivals of the Municipality of Naples, featuring religious celebrations and a free evening concert.

A patronal feast in the heart of Secondigliano

Every autumn, the Secondigliano district in the northern part of Naples gathers around its patron saint for the Saint Gaetano Errico Festival. This is not a food fair or a tourist-driven event; it is the celebration of a community honoring a priest who was born and lived among these streets, now one of the most beloved figures in the popular devotion of the Municipality of Naples and the entire Campania region.

The focal point of the day is the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata on Via Dante Alighieri, the church the saint commissioned and built, which now houses his remains. The liturgical celebrations, moments of prayer, and the most spectacular part of the festivalโ€”the free evening concertโ€”are all centered around the sanctuary.

Who was Saint Gaetano Errico?

Gaetano Errico was born in Secondigliano on October 19, 1791, and died there on October 29, 1860. A priest and educator, he dedicated his life to popular preaching and the confessional, earning the trust of a neighborhood that was then little more than a village on the outskirts of the city. In 1833, he founded the congregation of the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, which is now present in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

His path to sainthood was long: beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 14, 2002, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Benedict XVI on October 12, 2008, in St. Peter's Square. His liturgical memorial falls on October 29, the anniversary of his death, while the local neighborhood festival is scheduled annually between mid and late October.

The Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata

The history of the church is inseparable from that of the saint. In 1826, Errico announced to the faithful his plan for a temple dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows (the Addolorata): in just a few days, the neighborhood collected offerings and precious items, and despite strong local opposition, construction began on January 2, 1828. The consecration took place on December 9, 1830.

  • Style โ€” Neoclassical single-nave layout, expanded between 1885 and 1894 with a second nave and new chapels.
  • Decoration โ€” Marble cladding, gilded stucco, and frescoes by Vincenzo Galloppi on the vaults.
  • The Statue โ€” The wooden Our Lady of Sorrows, sculpted by Francesco Verzella in 1835, remade several times before receiving the founder's approval.
  • The Remains โ€” Since 1991, the body of Saint Gaetano Errico has rested in a side chapel of the sanctuary.

How the festival unfolds

The structure follows the classic Neapolitan patronal feast format: Eucharistic celebrations and devotional moments during the day, followed by a musical evening in front of the sanctuary, open to everyone and free of charge. For the 2026 edition, the event is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 8:00 PM, featuring a concert by Neapolitan tenor Francesco Malapena, dedicated to the saint who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts.

"Blessed are those who experience them": The Patronal Festivals of Naples

For several years, the Saint Gaetano Errico Festival has been part of "Beato chi le vive" ("Blessed are those who experience them"), the series of Patronal Festivals promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities of the Municipality of Naples. The 2026 edition, the fourth, includes 26 festivals from June 1st to October 17th across the various Municipalities, with solemn masses, processions, concerts, and performances in churches, squares, and streets.

The fact that the calendar opens with Saint Erasmus and closes in Secondigliano is no coincidence: the series was created to tell the story of a Naples that goes beyond the historic center and to restore a full role to the northern districts of the metropolitan city. The previous edition recorded over twenty festivals and approximately 50,000 total attendees.

Why it is worth attending

Visitors from outside the area will find an authentic, unfiltered festival where devotion coexists with the joy of being out in the streets. It is also a rare opportunity to enter a sanctuary far from the tourist circuits and to listen for free to a repertoire that blends opera and Neapolitan song. Those who live in Campania already know: patronal festivals are the true calendar of the communities, and the one in Secondigliano is a clear example.

Saint Gaetano Errico โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Saint Gaetano Errico Festival takes place on Saturday, October 17, at the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata on Via Dante Alighieri in Secondigliano. At 8:00 PM, Neapolitan tenor Francesco Malapena will perform a concert dedicated to the saint who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts. The event concludes the fourth edition of "Beato chi le vive," the calendar of Patronal Festivals of the Municipality of Naples. Free admission.

The grand finale of the 2026 Patronal Festivals

The Municipality of Naples has entrusted Secondigliano with the closing of the fourth edition of "Beato chi le vive": after 26 festivals held since June 1st across the city's Municipalities, the curtain falls on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in front of the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Addolorata, the church commissioned by Saint Gaetano Errico and guardian of his remains.

The evening features Neapolitan tenor Francesco Malapena, winner of the 2004 Enrico Caruso Competition for tenors and guest of international theaters: his 8:00 PM concert is designed as a musical tribute to the saint who founded the Missionaries of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.

As with all events in the series promoted by the Department of Tourism and Productive Activities, admission is free. Surrounding the concert, the parish community organizes the usual liturgical celebrations and devotional moments of the patronal feast, the schedules of which are announced by the sanctuary in the days preceding the event.
