About Piatto Trail

Piatto Trail is a non-competitive running event held every February in Lenta, in the province of Vercelli, marking the start of the Circuito Viola season. As the name suggests, the course is almost entirely flat, winding along dirt paths immersed in nature between the village and the banks of the Sesia River. With three distances (14 km, 7 km, and a 2 km mini-run), it is suitable for everyone, from experienced trail runners to families. The event supports a charitable cause: raising funds for research into polymicrogyria, a rare neurological condition.

A flat run along the Sesia River

The Piatto Trail is a non-competitive running event held every year in February in Lenta, a small town in the Valsesia area of the Vercelli province, in Piedmont. The name leaves no room for doubt: unlike mountain trails, the elevation gain here is almost non-existent. The route follows mostly dirt paths that cross the countryside between the village of Lenta and the banks of the Sesia river, before returning to the sports center where it begins.

Three distances for everyone

For years, the organizers have offered three options designed to welcome every type of participant:

  • 14 km long trail — for those seeking a more challenging distance through fields and paths along the river;
  • 7 km short loop — suitable for amateur runners and walkers;
  • 2 km mini-run — open to everyone, including families and children, also suitable for walking and Nordic walking.

As it is a non-competitive event, the atmosphere is relaxed and social: the Piatto Trail has always been an occasion that combines sport, nature, and community on a late winter Sunday.

A run with a charitable purpose

The Piatto Trail is organized by the Circuito Viola association, created to raise funds for research into polymicrogyria, a rare neurological condition that affected Viola, a young girl from Civiasco. Every year, the Circuito Viola season kicks off in Lenta, featuring a series of charity running events across the Valsesia and Vercelli regions. Registering for the race means supporting a worthy cause.

The event that opens the Valsesia running season

With editions that have previously gathered nearly 300 participants, including many from the nearby Biella area, the Piatto Trail has established itself as one of the most cherished events on the Vercelli winter running calendar. The collaboration with Atletica Valsesia and local sports organizations confirms the event's deep roots in the local community of Lenta and the Valsesia valley.

Piatto Trail — edition 2026
