The great autumn race between the Cervo Valley and Oasi Zegna
The Trail Monte Casto is one of the most established trail running events in Piedmont, organized by the A.S.D. Trail Monte Casto based in Andorno Micca, a small town in the Province of Biella nestled in the Cervo Valley. Every year, at the end of October, the race concludes the season of major Piedmontese trail events, attracting athletes from all over Italy and abroad: in the 2025 edition, over 700 runners from 30 provinces and 16 different nationalities took to the starting line.
The charm of Trail Monte Casto lies in its trails, which cross some of the most evocative places in the Biella area, between the Cervo Valley and Oasi Zegna. The flagship race is the 44 km with 2,050 meters of elevation gain, a demanding track that tests even the most experienced runners; alongside this, there is the 20 km race with 850 meters of elevation gain, more accessible but still technical. The program is completed by a non-competitive walk of about 8 km, designed for those who want to experience the event's atmosphere and the views of the Biella mountains without the pressure of the clock.
Trail Monte Casto is the final stage of the Piemontrail Challenge, the circuit that brings together the main trail races in the region, and is valid as a qualifying event for the FIDAL regional long trail title. The event is also recognized by major international circuits, a factor that increases its prestige and attracts prominent names in trail running every year: in 2025, Cristian Minoggio set the new record for the 44 km in 3h28'03".
Beyond the competition, Trail Monte Casto is a moment of celebration for Andorno Micca and the entire Cervo Valley. The post-race, the famous "third half," brings together athletes, volunteers, and fans in a convivial atmosphere that has become part of the event's identity. The organizational machine, largely made up of local volunteers, takes care of trail maintenance and participant hospitality every year, making this race a true pride of the Biella community.
The 19th edition of the Trail Monte Casto is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026 in Andorno Micca (Province of Biella). The event will once again be the final stage of the Piemontrail Challenge.
