A living nativity scene celebrating ancient crafts in the Monregalese mountains
The Pianvignale Living Nativity is one of the most characteristic winter events in Piedmont and the entire Monregalese area. It takes place in the picturesque hamlet of Pianvignale, along the village of Serra San Giuseppe, in the municipality of Frabosa Sottana, in the province of Cuneo. Every year, in the first days of January, the ancient houses and paths of the village come alive to create a collective re-enactment that blends faith, memory, and rural tradition.
The common thread of the event is ancient crafts: along the route, you will find about forty stations where actors and artisans demonstrate the skills of the past. You can observe washerwomen, seamstresses, embroiderers, spinners, basket makers weaving wild chestnut branches, sculptors, blacksmiths, woodcutters, shepherds, charcutiers, and bakers. It is a journey into the past of the Cuneo valleys, designed to preserve the roots of the mountain community.
The heart of the route remains the representation of the Holy Family and the arrival of the Magi. The event traditionally concludes with a sacred music concert inside the parish church of San Giuseppe, a moment of reflection that closes the day. Over the years, choirs, vocal ensembles, and bagpipe players from the region, particularly from Vottignasco, have performed.
Along the route, there is no shortage of street food featuring local products: among the most appreciated specialties are chestnut tagliatelle and tastings of local delicacies, to be enjoyed warm during your visit. The daytime event is also designed for families with children, featuring artistic workshops and games dedicated to the little ones.
The origins of the nativity scene date back to the early eighties, initiated by Sister Ivana and the community of Pianvignale. After a few years of interruption, the event was resumed in 2003 thanks to the commitment of the Pro Loco of Frabosa Sottana, which still organizes the event today in collaboration with the municipal administration and with the support of the parish. Over time, it has become a meeting point between the snow tourism of nearby Prato Nevoso and the life of the local community.
Included in the winter calendar of the Municipality of Frabosa Sottana and the Piedmont Region, the Pianvignale Living Nativity attracts thousands of visitors every year from all over the province of Cuneo and beyond. Admission is free and a shuttle service connects the parking area to the village, making the event accessible to everyone.
