The international photography biennial of Lucca
The Photolux Festival is one of the most significant events dedicated to photography in Italy and Europe. Established in Lucca and held biennially since 2012, the event takes place in the historic center of this Tuscan city, where refined Renaissance palaces and monumental buildings are transformed into exhibition halls for three weeks between November and December. The festival is organized in the municipality of Lucca, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany), with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, the Province, and the Municipality.
Photolux brings dozens of exhibitions to Lucca, distributed across prestigious venues such as Palazzo Ducale and Villa Bottini. Each edition tackles a major contemporary theme, fostering a dialogue between masters of photography, photojournalists, emerging artists, and avant-garde visual languages. The heart of the program features major international awards hosted in Lucca, including the renowned World Press Photo, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, the Romano Cagnoni Award, and the Photolux Intarget Award.
The festival alternates monographic retrospectives dedicated to great names in photography with research projects on current events, memory, and identity. Over the years, Lucca has welcomed international authors and exhibitions focused on photojournalism, social reportage, and the transformations of photographic language in the digital and artificial intelligence era.
The strength of Photolux lies in its bond with Lucca: the exhibitions are within walking distance, winding through the city walls, squares, and palaces of the center, in a journey that combines great photography with Tuscany's historical and artistic heritage. It is the perfect opportunity to visit Lucca in autumn, pairing visual culture with the discovery of one of the most fascinating art cities in Tuscany.
The Photolux Festival 2026 will take place in Lucca from November 21 to December 13, 2026, confirming the biennial nature of the event. For about three weeks, the historic center of the Tuscan city will host dozens of exhibitions in its historic palaces, alongside conferences, workshops, portfolio reviews, and meetings with leading figures in international photography.
As per tradition, the 2026 edition will focus on great auteur photography, photojournalism, and international awards. The theme of the edition, the complete list of exhibitions and venues, and the event calendar will be published by the organization on the official website in the weeks preceding the inauguration.
Lucca is easily accessible by train: the station is located just a few steps from the city walls, which lead into the historic center where the exhibitions take place. By car, Lucca is served by the A11 Firenze-Mare and A12 motorways; the nearest airports are Pisa (about 30 minutes away) and Florence.
Admission to the exhibitions is ticketed, with prices ranging approximately from 10 to 20 euros depending on the option (single venue or full circuit). Reduced rates and passes are generally available. Information and advance sales are available on the official website.
The festival takes place between November and December; the program of guided tours and meetings is richer on weekends. It is advisable to book accommodation in the historic center of Lucca in advance.
