About Pezzata Rossa di Oropa Exhibition

Every spring, in the Castellazzo region of Occhieppo Superiore (Province of Biella), farmers and visitors gather for the Pezzata Rossa di Oropa Exhibition, an event dedicated to the native cattle breed that serves as a symbol of the Biella valleys. Organized by the Pro Loco of Occhieppo Superiore and Pollone, the day celebrates rural tradition with a livestock parade, awards ceremonies, a craft market, and a country-style lunch.

A day dedicated to the iconic breed of the Biella region

The Pezzata Rossa di Oropa Exhibition is one of the most cherished livestock events in the Biella territory. It takes place in the Castellazzo region of Occhieppo Superiore, a small town in the Province of Biella nestled at the foot of the pre-Alpine valleys. Every year, it brings together farmers, families, and curious visitors around an exceptional protagonist: the Pezzata Rossa di Oropa, the ancient native cattle breed of the Biella mountains.

Pezzata Rossa di Oropa: a heritage to preserve

Once known as the razzetta di Oropa, this breed is recognizable by its patchy coat, ranging from orange to deep red, with white markings on the head, legs, belly, and the tip of the tail. It is a hardy, mountain breed, perfectly adapted to alpine pastures and the steep slopes of the Elvo and Cervo Valleys. Listed among breeds with limited distribution and considered at risk of extinction, it is now protected by passionate breeders who continue to raise them and produce dairy products: its milk is used to create excellent toma cheese, maccagno, and alpine butter.

Tradition, community, and awards

The event is more than just a livestock show; it is an appointment that strengthens the bond between the town, its mountain farmers, and the rural culture of the Biella region. Breeders bring their best animals, which are evaluated and awarded throughout the day; as per tradition, a dozen breeders receive recognition during the awards ceremony.

What to expect during the day

  • Exhibition and evaluation of Pezzata Rossa di Oropa cattle
  • Market featuring artisanal and commercial products
  • Country-style lunch open to everyone
  • Bar service and refreshment area
  • Free shuttle service to easily reach the event area

Organized jointly by the Pro Loco of Occhieppo Superiore and Pollone, the Pezzata Rossa di Oropa Exhibition is the perfect opportunity to discover one of the livestock excellences of Piedmont and to experience an authentic Sunday immersed in Biella traditions.
