A festival that tastes of cheese and tradition
…Per le Vie del Cacio is one of the most cherished summer events in Magliano de' Marsi, a village in the Marsica area nestled on the slopes of Mount Velino, in the Province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Created to showcase local excellence through a journey of flavors, traditions, and conviviality, the festival combines the ancient game that made the town famous with the richness of Marsican cuisine in a single day.
The heart of the festival: the Mini Cheese Tournament
The most iconic moment is the Mini Cheese Tournament, held in the afternoon, which draws on the centuries-old tradition of the Cheese Game of Magliano. In this folk competition, participants divided into teams test their skills and sportsmanship by throwing a pezza (wheel) of cheese, recreating a smaller version of the game that brings the village streets to life in winter. It is a competition that blends memory and celebration, capable of stopping time and drawing entire families into the streets amidst cheering and joy.
The flavors of Marsica
As evening falls, the festival shifts to its culinary side: the stalls set up between Piazza Santa Lucia and the Belvedere offer delicacies that represent the excellence of Abruzzese cuisine. Among the dishes that have made the event a gourmet delight over the years are sweet and savory fried pizzas, pasta with orapi (mountain wild spinach), truffle pasta, bruschetta, the essential arrosticini, and sandwiches with yellow bread, broccoli rabe, and pancetta. Local wines are also featured, from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to Trebbiano.
A signature event
Now in its fourth edition, "…Per le Vie del Cacio" has become a symbol of the Magliano summer: an opportunity to rediscover ancient flavors and traditions, strengthening the bond between the community and its territory while attracting visitors eager to discover the beauty of the Marsica region. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Magliano de' Marsi with the patronage of the Municipality.
…Per le Vie del Cacio — edition 2026
Following the success of previous editions, …Per le Vie del Cacio is eagerly awaited back in Magliano de' Marsi for the summer of 2026. At the moment, the Pro Loco has not yet released the official dates or the program: the event usually takes place in August, with the Mini Cheese Tournament in the afternoon and food stalls in the evening in Piazza Santa Lucia. Information will be updated as soon as the Pro Loco publishes the final calendar.
