The rural cuisine festival of Ticciano, in the hills of Vico Equense
The Peasant Flavors Festival takes place in Ticciano, a small hamlet in the municipality of Vico Equense, in the province of Naples, Campania. The village sits at an altitude of about 510 meters on the ridges separating the Gulf of Naples from the Sorrento Peninsula. With just over six hundred inhabitants, it offers a rural setting of chestnut groves, terraced vegetable gardens, and houses clustered around the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, which remains the physical heart of the festival.
For a few evenings in August, the narrow village streets fill with tables, tasting stalls, and lights. It follows the classic formula of a Campanian rural festival, where instead of a single stage, there is a spread-out path winding through small squares and courtyards. The landscape plays its part, as at that altitude, August evenings are cooler than on the coast, and the view stretches out over the sea.
The festival's signature dish is carne di capra alla ticcianese, a slow-cooked local pastoral tradition that has become a true hallmark of Ticciano. Alongside it, you will find traditional desserts prepared in the village and local wine produced on the area's terraced hillsides.
The guiding principle declared by the organizers is farm-to-table: ingredients sourced from the countryside around the village, family recipes, and no concessions to commercial fair food. This choice has made the festival a benchmark among rural events on the Sorrento Peninsula, frequented by both residents of neighboring villages and visitors coming up from Vico Equense and Sorrento.
The event has been held since 1999 and is organized by the ACLI Attilio Buonocore circle of Ticciano, together with the parish of San Michele Arcangelo and with the support of the Municipality of Vico Equense. It is an entirely volunteer-run effort: the village residents do the cooking, serve at the tables, and set up the spaces, which explains the familiar character that visitors immediately recognize.
The festival is part of the municipal summer calendar Vico d'Estate, which distributes festivals, concerts, and events across the thirteen local hamlets from late May to September. In the same month of August, other events follow, such as the Riavulillo Festival in Arola, the Eggplant Festival in Preazzano, Polpette in Festa in Santa Maria del Castello, and the Potato Festival in Moiano.
Ticciano is the birthplace of chef Antonino Cannavacciuolo, who has returned to the Peasant Flavors Festival several times as a guest, bringing national visibility to an event that remains deeply rooted in the village. His presence has become one of the most anticipated elements of recent editions, without changing the popular nature of the event: people continue to eat at street tables with dishes prepared by the village families.
The evenings are accompanied by live folk music, featuring groups tied to the Campanian tradition, and entertainment spread along the festival route. Past editions have also featured exhibitions by local artisans and producers, completing the story of an agricultural community.
Those visiting the Sorrento Peninsula in August find intense tourism on the coast; heading up to Ticciano means encountering the rural dimension of this territory, which for centuries supplied the markets of Vico Equense with timber, charcoal, fruit, and cheese. The Peasant Flavors Festival is the most direct way to taste it today, during an evening of communal tables, music, and conversation under the stars.
The festival in Ticciano, a hamlet of the municipality of Vico Equense (province of Naples, Campania), is confirmed for August 9, 10, and 11, 2026, as part of the Vico d'Estate 2026 calendar presented by the municipal administration, which covers events in the hamlets from late May to September.
The detailed program is released separately by the organizers, the village's ACLI circle together with the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, usually in the days immediately preceding the festival. As every year, the event takes place in the evening along the village streets, with tastings of farm-to-table products and live music.
During the same week, the Vico Equense calendar offers other village festivals: the Riavulillo Festival in Arola (August 2-4), the Feast of San Salvatore (August 5-7), and the Eggplant Festival in Preazzano (August 12-13).
Ticciano is a hillside hamlet of Vico Equense, in the province of Naples. By car, it can be reached from the SS145 Sorrentina state road by exiting at Vico Equense and driving up towards the high hamlets (Moiano, Ticciano). The road is narrow and winding, so it is best to arrive early to find parking along the village. By train, get off at the Vico Equense Circumvesuviana station (Naples-Sorrento line) and continue with EAV buses heading to the hillside hamlets or by taxi. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino.
The festival takes place in the evening, with stalls opening in the late afternoon/evening. Exact times and tasting prices are communicated by the organizers along with the program, which is released in the days leading up to the event on the dedicated Facebook page.
Ticciano is at an altitude of over 500 meters: even in August, evenings can be cool, so a light sweater is recommended. Comfortable shoes are advised, as the festival route crosses alleys and sloping sections. For accommodation, Vico Equense is the reference point, offering facilities on the coast just a few kilometers away, or alternatively Sorrento and Castellammare di Stabia.
