San Marziale, San Domenico, and San Rocco: two days of tradition featuring the bacili parade, torchlight procession, and fireworks.

In the heart of inland Abruzzo, at the foot of the Majella mountains and overlooking the Sangro Valley, the village of Torricella Peligna, in the province of Chieti, celebrates its Patronal Feast every year in honor of San Marziale, the town's patron saint, alongside San Domenico and San Rocco. Since 1986, these three observances have been unified into one grand summer festival, traditionally held on August 8th and 9th. This timing coincides with the return of emigrants, bringing families and visitors with ties to the Torricella community back to the village.
According to tradition, San Marziale was a child saint who lived during the time of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and was martyred at just seven years old alongside his mother, Saint Felicity, and his brothers. This cult, of Roman origin and likely spread throughout Abruzzo by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages, remains one of the most deeply felt in the region. It is no coincidence that the feast does not fall on July 10th, the saint's historical date, but rather in mid-August, when the village is at its most vibrant.
The most iconic moment is the parade of the bacili (or "parade of the basins"), one of Torricella's most cherished traditions. Children dressed in traditional Abruzzese costumes walk in pairs along the main street carrying the 'bacili'โvessels that serve as a symbol of Abruzzoโfilled with sweets and decorated with flowers, all accompanied by a marching band. It is a living tableau that bridges generations and passes the spirit of the festival on to the youngest members of the community.
The Patronal Feast is also the perfect opportunity to explore Torricella Peligna, a village in the municipality of the same name immersed in the Majella landscape. Amidst narrow alleys, squares, and street music, the festival blends religious rites with secular celebrations, strengthening the identity of a community that gathers every summer to renew its roots.
The program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Torricella Peligna has not yet been published. According to tradition, the festival is expected to take place in the first half of August with the parade of the bacili, the evening torchlight procession, fireworks, and the procession of San Marziale. Dates and the detailed program will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car: Torricella Peligna can be reached via the SS84 Frentana road, taking the exit from the A14 (Val di Sangro) or the A25 motorway. The historic center is about an hour from the Adriatic coast.
The Patronal Feast is traditionally held on August 8th and 9th every year.
Events take place in the historic center and at the parish church; admission is free. During the peak summer season, it is advisable to check for accommodation availability in the surrounding villages well in advance.
