The patronal feast of Bomba

The Patronal Feast of Saint Donatus, Bishop and Martyr is the most significant annual celebration for Bomba, a small village of fewer than seven hundred inhabitants perched at 424 meters above sea level in the middle Sangro Valley, in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo. Saint Donatus, whose liturgical feast day is August 7th, is the patron of both the town and the parish of Santa Maria del Popolo, and an ancient, deeply ingrained devotion revolves around his figure.

The procession and the relics

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. The imposing statue of the Saint, carried on the shoulders of the faithful, evokes powerful emotions, further fueled by the numerous ex-voto offerings that testify to graces received over the centuries. During the celebrations, the precious 18th-century relics kept in the church are displayed for veneration: a silver bust of the Saint and a silver arm containing fragments of his body, both dating back to the 1700s. The blessing of the faithful with prayers to the patron saint concludes the most intense liturgical moments.

A community celebration

The Feast of Saint Donatus is much more than a religious observance; it is an occasion that reunites the entire town. During these days, Bomba welcomes many emigrants returning from abroad and larger cities to reconnect with their roots, alongside pilgrims from neighboring towns in the Sangro Valley. The village streets come alive with illuminations, market stalls, music, and social gatherings, creating an atmosphere that blends the sacred and the secular in the best tradition of Abruzzese patronal festivals.

Bomba and its surroundings

Overlooking the picturesque Lake Bomba, an artificial reservoir created in the 1950s along the Sangro River, the village preserves a charming historic center with Renaissance palaces and medieval walls. Bomba is also the birthplace of brothers Bertrando and Silvio Spaventa, prominent figures of the Risorgimento and 19th-century Italian thought. Participating in the Feast of Saint Donatus means immersing oneself in the authentic identity of an Abruzzese village that proudly guards its faith and traditions.

When it takes place

The feast is traditionally celebrated in the first days of August, near the liturgical date of August 7th. In 2025, the festivities were held on August 6th and 7th. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Bomba and the parish for the updated program.
