The patronal feast of Fallascoso in honor of the hermit saint

The San Rinaldo Festival is the patronal feast of Fallascoso, a village in the municipality of Torricella Peligna, nestled in the heart of the Abruzzo region. Its origins are lost in time; the first written record dates back to 1657, when a chronicler noted that “his feast day is on August 28th, which is celebrated with great solemnity.” Since then, the August 28th date has remained unchanged, linked by some scholars to a harvest thanksgiving rather than the saint's date of death.
According to tradition, San Rinaldo was a Basilian monk who arrived in Abruzzo from Calabria and chose to live as a hermit in a small cave at the base of a rock face just outside Fallascoso. Beside the hermitage—now inaccessible for safety reasons—stands a rural chapel built in 1843-1844, which houses the papier-mâché statue of the saint and the nearby San Rinaldo Fountain. The cult, approved by the Congregation of Rites in 1893, attributes thaumaturgic powers to the saint, including protection against wolves, livestock diseases, fevers, and headaches.
The heart of the festival remains the religious procession that winds through the village streets, featuring the statue of the saint carried on shoulders, the wooden crucifix leading the parade, the banner, the parish priest, local authorities, and the festival committee. A historic silk banner, crafted in 1911 by emigrants from Fallascoso living in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and restored in the 1990s, is still used today. Fireworks traditionally mark the opening and closing of the festivities, while a brass band accompanies the sacred hymns.
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival has evolved into a vibrant community event. Abruzzese folk choirs, pop orchestras, ballroom dancing, and evening gatherings in the square bring the village to life. During the festival week, modern traditions also take place, such as late-night pasta feasts, auctions of donated goods, and the now-customary ecological-nature walk to the hermitage, organized by AVIS, which leads faithful and hikers to the saint's sites in the days leading up to the main event. The San Rinaldo Festival is a powerful identity marker that reunites residents and emigrants from Italy and the United States every summer.
Today, safeguarded by the San Rinaldo Cultural Association (founded in 2019), the festival represents a precious piece of intangible heritage in the Abruzzo hinterland, between the Majella massif and the Aventino Valley. For those visiting Torricella Peligna and its surrounding villages, August 28th is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic hamlet and a centuries-old tradition that remains deeply felt.
The 2026 San Rinaldo Festival is expected in Fallascoso, a village of Torricella Peligna (Chieti), around the traditional date of August 28th. Detailed dates and the program have not yet been released. The patronal feast usually includes a religious procession through the village streets with the statue of the saint carried on shoulders, musical accompaniment by the band, opening and closing fireworks, and evenings of folk music in the square. Updated information will be published by the festival committee and the San Rinaldo Cultural Association.
The festival takes place in the village of Fallascoso, in the municipality of Torricella Peligna (ZIP code 66019), in the province of Chieti. Religious celebrations and the procession take place along the village streets and the parish church; the rural chapel and the hermitage of San Rinaldo are located just outside the town.
By car: Torricella Peligna can be reached via the SS84 and the roads of the Chieti hinterland. From Chieti and the Adriatic coast, the route climbs inland along the Aventino Valley. The nearest train station is Casoli-Sant'Angelo on the Sangritana line, from which you can continue by local transport or car.
The patronal feast is traditionally celebrated on August 28th every year, often with festivities extending over the surrounding days. It is recommended to check the updated dates and program with the Municipality of Torricella Peligna or the San Rinaldo Cultural Association.
