The excellence of Abruzzo's artistic craftsmanship in the historic center of Guardiagrele
The Abruzzo Artistic Craftsmanship Exhibition is one of the oldest and most representative events in the Abruzzo region. Established in 1970, it is held every summer in Guardiagrele, a village in the province of Chieti nicknamed the stone city for its elegant medieval historic center and recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Promoted by the Ente Mostra Artigianato Artistico Abruzzese, the exhibition gathers the best of regional artisanal production every year.
Guardiagrele boasts a centuries-old artisan tradition, particularly linked to metalwork and goldsmithing: the famous 15th-century goldsmith Nicola da Guardiagrele worked here, and the historic biennial international goldsmith art competition is dedicated to him. The exhibition presents a wide route that traverses the excellence of Abruzzo's craftsmanship:
Alongside the exhibition, the event offers educational workshops for young people, thematic competitions for artisans, designers, and art school students, book presentations, concerts, and cultural appointments. Each edition revolves around a theme that invites exhibitors to interpret their craft with original works, enhancing the dialogue between tradition and contemporary design.
The setting for the exhibition is the historic center of Guardiagrele, among churches, stone palaces, and alleys that open onto the landscape of the Majella. The event enlivens the town for weeks, attracting visitors from all over Abruzzo and beyond, confirming itself as a reference point for those who love artistic craftsmanship, collecting, and the region's material culture.
The 56th edition of the Abruzzo Artistic Craftsmanship Exhibition takes place in Guardiagrele, in the province of Chieti, from August 1 to 23, 2026, with the inauguration on July 31 at 6:00 PM. Since the historic Palazzo dell'Artigianato on Via Roma is temporarily unavailable for consolidation and renovation work, the exhibition adopts a diffused format: thirteen exhibition rooms distributed throughout the historic center, with the main venue at the Palazzo Scolastico on Via Cavalieri.
The theme of the 2026 national competition is "Harmony", understood as a balance between forms, materials, colors, and functionality: artisans are asked to present the best of their production with original artifacts. Master artisans, designers, and students from art schools and institutes of craftsmanship, fashion, and design participate in the competition.
A signposted route, with a dedicated map, guides visitors through the rooms of the center, touching places like Largo Garibaldi, the Villa Comunale, and Porta San Giovanni; the secretariat and registration are at Largo Pignatari. The event is organized by the Ente Mostra Artigianato Artistico Abruzzese, chaired by Gianfranco Marsibilio.
