About Patronal Feast of Santa Brigida

Every year in mid-August, the small village of Pennapiedimonte, perched on the slopes of the Maiella in the Province of Chieti, celebrates its Patronal Feast in honor of Santa Brigida. From August 16th to 19th, four days of events weave together religious rites, processions, live music, and convivial gatherings. The heart of the festival is August 17th, the day dedicated to the patron saint, but the celebrations also honor Maria Madre del Buon Cammino, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Roch, in a tradition that unites the entire Pennese community.

The Patronal Feast of Pennapiedimonte

In the heart of the Maiella National Park, the village of Pennapiedimonte (Province of Chieti, Abruzzo) experiences one of its most cherished moments every summer: the Patronal Feast of Santa Brigida. Perched at an altitude of nearly 700 meters, this small municipality of a few hundred inhabitants, known for its artistic white Maiella stone carving, transforms for a few days into a festive hub that draws back emigrants, vacationers, and visitors from neighboring towns.

A four-day celebration

The local tradition is not limited to a single day; the festivities span four days in mid-August, each dedicated to a figure dear to local devotion.

  • August 16th — The day dedicated to Maria Madre del Buon Cammino, with a celebration at the Fonte Gallo site, nestled in nature at the foot of the mountain.
  • August 17th — The most solemn day, dedicated to the patron saint Santa Brigida, featuring mass and a procession through the streets of the historic center.
  • August 18th — The feast in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua.
  • August 19th — The celebrations for Saint Roch, a figure deeply rooted in the community, whose image is kept in the parish church of Santissimi Silvestro e Rocco.

Between the sacred and the profane

As is customary in Abruzzese patronal feasts, religious rites are accompanied by secular events: brass bands, concerts, and evening shows animate the village squares, while food stalls offer local flavors. Fireworks are a must, closing the most important evenings and illuminating the silhouette of the Maiella. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover local cuisine, from the famous salsicciotto di Pennapiedimonte to traditional Abruzzese peasant dishes.

A village to discover

The Patronal Feast is also the ideal excuse to visit Pennapiedimonte and its extraordinary natural setting: the Feudo Ugni Nature Reserve, one of the largest in the Maiella, the hiking trails, and the famous Balzolo panoramic balcony overlooking the valley. An authentic corner of mountainous Abruzzo where popular devotion and the warmth of the people blend into a festival passed down from generation to generation.
