Four days of devotion and tradition in Pennapiedimonte, on the Maiella mountains
In the heart of the Maiella National Park, the village of Pennapiedimonte (Province of Chieti, Abruzzo) experiences one of its most cherished moments every summer: the Patronal Feast of Santa Brigida. Perched at an altitude of nearly 700 meters, this small municipality of a few hundred inhabitants, known for its artistic white Maiella stone carving, transforms for a few days into a festive hub that draws back emigrants, vacationers, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The local tradition is not limited to a single day; the festivities span four days in mid-August, each dedicated to a figure dear to local devotion.
As is customary in Abruzzese patronal feasts, religious rites are accompanied by secular events: brass bands, concerts, and evening shows animate the village squares, while food stalls offer local flavors. Fireworks are a must, closing the most important evenings and illuminating the silhouette of the Maiella. It is the perfect opportunity to rediscover local cuisine, from the famous salsicciotto di Pennapiedimonte to traditional Abruzzese peasant dishes.
The Patronal Feast is also the ideal excuse to visit Pennapiedimonte and its extraordinary natural setting: the Feudo Ugni Nature Reserve, one of the largest in the Maiella, the hiking trails, and the famous Balzolo panoramic balcony overlooking the valley. An authentic corner of mountainous Abruzzo where popular devotion and the warmth of the people blend into a festival passed down from generation to generation.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Santa Brigida in Pennapiedimonte (Province of Chieti) will take place from Sunday, August 16th to Wednesday, August 19th, with the solemn day of the patron saint set for August 17, 2026. As per tradition, the days will be marked by celebrations in honor of Maria Madre del Buon Cammino (at Fonte Gallo), Santa Brigida, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Roch, accompanied by processions, music, and festive moments in the Maiella village. The complete program with times, artists, and secular events will be announced by the organizers closer to the date.
Pennapiedimonte can be reached by car from the A25 (Alanno-Scafa exit) or the A14 (Pescara Sud / Francavilla exit), continuing inland along the roads that climb towards the Maiella. The village is about an hour from Pescara and Chieti.
The festivities take place in mid-August, with the feast day of the patron saint, Santa Brigida, set for August 17th.
The village is located at a high altitude: we recommend clothing suitable for cool mountain evenings. The area is ideal for combining the festival with hikes in the Maiella National Park and the Feudo Ugni Reserve.
