The August patronal festivities in Montebello sul Sangro, blending faith, tradition, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Abruzzo summer, the small municipality of Montebello sul Sangro, in the province of Chieti, renews its most cherished tradition: the Patronal Feast of Santa Giusta and San Ciriaco. The event takes place in early August, when the village overlooking the Sangro Valley and Lake Bomba dresses up to honor its saints. Santa Giusta is celebrated on August 7th, while August 8th is dedicated to San Ciriaco, the town's patron saint.
The religious heart of the festival is the Holy Mass and the solemn procession that winds through the village streets, accompanied by the entire community. Devotion to the patron saints is rooted in the centuries-old history of this mountain village, once known as Buonanotte, whose old town still preserves the charming Church of Santa Giusta.
Alongside the religious observances, the festivities offer a rich entertainment program. The days are enlivened by recreational events designed for all ages, while the evenings come alive with two dance parties hosted in Piazza San Ciriaco. The festivities are framed by the unmissable fireworks displays: the opening fireworks that announce the start of the festival and the final pyrotechnic show organized by the municipality, illuminating the sky over the Sangro Valley.
Situated at an altitude of about 810 meters on a ridge overlooking the Sangro Valley, Montebello sul Sangro is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Chieti and all of Abruzzo. Its patronal feast is a precious opportunity to rediscover the identity of this mountain community and to reunite: many emigrants and descendants of the town return during these summer days. Admission to all events is free.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Santa Giusta and San Ciriaco has not yet been officially confirmed by the Municipality of Montebello sul Sangro. Following the custom of recent years, the festivities are expected to take place in the first days of August, with the celebration of Santa Giusta on the 7th and the patron saint San Ciriaco on the 8th. The full program will be announced before the summer.
Montebello sul Sangro is located in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, above the Sangro Valley and near Lake Bomba. By car, it can be reached from the Fondovalle Sangro (SS 652); the reference motorway exit is Val di Sangro on the A14, then continue inland.
All patronal feast events are free to attend. For updated information on dates and the program, you can contact the Municipality of Montebello sul Sangro at +39 0872 940297 or via email at [email protected].
As this is a very small mountain village, we recommend planning dinner on-site during the dance evenings and wearing comfortable shoes to follow the procession along the steep streets of the town.
