The patronal feast of Pennadomo, the village carved into the rock
The Saint Lawrence Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Pennadomo, a small municipality of just under three hundred inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo. Celebrated unfailingly on August 10th, the day dedicated to Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the occasion combines religious observance and festive spirit in a single day capable of drawing emigrants, vacationers, and visitors from neighboring villages back to town.
Pennadomo rises at an altitude of about 460 meters on a hill in the middle Sangro Valley, overlooking Lake Bomba. The houses huddle at the foot of the imposing limestone cliffs — the famous "thrown stones" — which have earned the village the nickname of the village "carved into the rock." Walking through the stone stairways, ancient portals, and glimpses of the historic center means immersing yourself in an intact medieval atmosphere, where the patronal feast also becomes an opportunity to rediscover the identity of a community deeply rooted in its land.
On the day of Saint Lawrence, the Pennadomo community pays homage to its protector according to the liturgical calendar and customs handed down from generation to generation. The most festive part of the day develops around the religious moment, which in recent years has featured events that have now become a tradition.
Organized by the Municipality of Pennadomo, the festival is also the ideal pretext to get to know this little-known corner of inland Abruzzo: the Pennadomo cliff, a destination for climbing and hiking enthusiasts, the nearby mirror of water of Lake Bomba, and the neighboring villages of the Sangro Aventino district. An authentic village festival, far from the large tourist flows, where tradition, nature, and community meet on the patron saint's day.
The 2026 Saint Lawrence Festival in Pennadomo is scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2026. The date is confirmed, but at the moment the official program for the day has not yet been released by the Municipality of Pennadomo.
Following the trend of recent editions, the patronal feast of the Abruzzo village in the province of Chieti should be structured between the religious celebration in honor of the patron saint and the usual moments of popular celebration, with the vintage car parade along Via Maiella and the evening concert in the square. Details regarding times, guests, and events will be communicated in the weeks leading up to the event.
Pennadomo is located in the middle Sangro Valley, in the province of Chieti. By car, it can be reached from the Fondovalle Sangro (SS652), taking the exit for the Bomba/Colledimezzo area, then following the signs for the village. The nearest train station is in the Sangro area; for local travel, a car is recommended.
The festival is celebrated every year on August 10th, the day of Saint Lawrence.
