The biennial re-enactment of the Coming of the Holy Child in Lama dei Peligni
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the small mountain village of Lama dei Peligni, perched at 669 meters on the slopes of the Majella, one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in inland Abruzzo takes place every two years: the Adventus. Established in 1993, the event stages the arrival of the small wax statue of the Holy Child, which reached Lama on May 20, 1760, and has been venerated by the local community ever since.
Tradition holds that the statuette was brought from the Holy Land by the local Franciscan friar Fra' Pietro Silvestri upon his return from Jerusalem. Over the centuries, a profound popular devotion has grown around this sacred image, blending faith, identity, and collective memory. The Adventus was created specifically to keep this history alive and pass it on to the new generations of the town.
The re-enactment takes place on a Sunday afternoon in August, turning the historic center into a massive open-air stage. A long costumed procession winds through the village streets, marked by stationary scenic tableaux and accompanied by narration and music that illustrate the various stages of the story. Re-enacted scenes include:
The procession concludes in Piazza Umberto I, where the statuette—a replica of the original kept in the parish church—is celebrated.
The Adventus is promoted by the Pro Loco of Lama dei Peligni and involves dozens of local participants who meticulously prepare the costumes, sets, and staging. The event is included in the national census of historical re-enactments by the Ministry of Culture, a testament to its cultural and identity-based value for Abruzzo and the Province of Chieti.
Nestled in the Majella National Park, the town of Lama dei Peligni is famous for the Grotta del Cavallone, the Apennine Chamois Wildlife Area, and the sfogliatella lamese, a typical product of the Abruzzese confectionery tradition. This natural and scenic setting makes a visit to the Adventus the perfect opportunity to discover one of the most evocative villages in the Abruzzo Apennines.
As this is a biennial event held in odd-numbered years, the Adventus of Lama dei Peligni does not have a confirmed edition scheduled for 2026. The dates for the 2026 edition have not been announced. The most recent re-enactment dates back to August 2025, and the next one is expected in 2027. This page will be updated with the official program as soon as the Pro Loco of Lama dei Peligni releases further information.
