The heart of Andria's devotion at the Trimoggia Sanctuary

The SS. Salvatore Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in the town of Andria, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, in the heart of Puglia. The festival takes place on August 6th, the day the Church celebrates the Transfiguration of the Lord, and centers around the SS. Salvatore Sanctuary, located about three kilometers from the city in an area historically known as Trimoggia, where a small hamlet once stood.
Tradition links the site to rock-hewn settlements featuring Byzantine-style frescoes. Around 1700, a 16th-century image of the "Flagellated Christ," depicting Jesus crowned with thorns, was discovered there and became the focal point of local devotion: during periods of drought, the faithful would carry the image into the city to pray for rain and comfort. The current church dates back to the early 20th century, designed by architect Riccardo Ceci, and houses a white marble altar featuring bronze statues of the apostles. The Sanctuary is currently entrusted to the Dehonian Fathers, who oversee its spiritual life and festivities.
The heart of the celebrations is August 6th, marked by Holy Masses held every hour from dawn until noon to accommodate the continuous flow of pilgrims. In the afternoon, the Sanctuary hosts Solemn Vespers and the solemn procession of the Savior's image, while the evening concludes with a Solemn Mass and festive events. On the eve of the feast, First Vespers and the first procession through the city streets take place; the following day is dedicated to the Day of the Sick, featuring Mass and the blessing of the infirm.
For the people of Andria, the SS. Salvatore Festival is more than just a religious event; it is a moment of community gathering. Many families of emigrants choose these August days to return home and reunite at the Sanctuary. Between liturgical rites, sacred chants, illuminations, and the traditional SS. Salvatore lottery, the festival blends the spiritual with the popular, confirming itself as one of the most well-attended summer events in the BAT territory and all of Puglia.
The SS. Salvatore Sanctuary in Andria (BT) is preparing to celebrate the SS. Salvatore Festival again in 2026, tied to the Solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord on August 6th. The exact dates and the full program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released by the Dehonian Fathers. According to custom, a triduum of celebrations around August 6th is expected, with Holy Masses following one another from dawn to noon, the solemn procession of the Savior's image through the streets of Andria, and the Day of the Sick. The detailed program will be updated as soon as it is released by the organizers.
