About Patronal Feast of Minervino Murge

The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and Our Lady of the Sabbath is the most cherished religious and civic event in Minervino Murge, in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. Every year, towards the end of September, the Murgia town gathers around its two Patron Saints with solemn processions, Holy Masses, brass band performances, illuminations lighting up the historic center, concerts in Piazza Bovio, and the traditional midnight fireworks display.

The feast of the two Patron Saints of Minervino Murge

The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel and Our Lady of the Sabbath is the most anticipated event of the year for Minervino Murge, a town in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani perched high on the Murgia, overlooking the Tavoliere and the Vulture area. For a few days at the end of September, the town pauses its daily routine to rally around its two heavenly Patrons, blending religious solemnity with popular celebration in a tapestry of secular rites, music, and conviviality.

Saint Michael the Archangel and Our Lady of the Sabbath

Devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel is deeply rooted in the Apulian Michaelic tradition, linked to the famous Gargano sanctuary and the evocative Grotto of Saint Michael that overlooks the Minervino territory. The Archangel, celebrated liturgically on September 29th, is joined by Our Lady of the Sabbath, the community's other great protector, whose effigy is carried in procession from the Church of the Conservatory to the Mother Church to open the festivities.

Between faith and tradition: the processions

The religious heart of the feast is marked by Holy Masses, the preparatory triduum, solemn vespers, and the Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Andria. The solemn procession of the two Patrons winds through the streets of the center, accompanied by renowned Apulian marching bands and the participation of civil and military authorities. The conclusion is marked by one of the most emotional and identity-defining rites: the "Sparten'z", the moving farewell moment when the statues return to their respective churches, greeted by the entire community.

The civic celebration: music, illuminations, and fireworks

Alongside the religious program, the civic festivities transform Piazza Bovio and the town center into a large open-air stage. Artistic illuminations create arches of light above the streets, while the schedule includes:

  • pop music concerts and shows featuring nationally renowned guests;
  • cabaret evenings and entertainment for all ages;
  • brass band concerts by guest ensembles, an authentic pillar of Apulian tradition;
  • the grand fireworks display that, at midnight, lights up the Murgia sky and brings the festivities to a close.

An event in the heart of the Murgia

The Patronal Feast is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee of Minervino Murge, which passionately manages fundraising and the entire program every year. Experiencing these days means immersing yourself in the authentic soul of a village in inland Apulia, where popular faith, good food, and hospitality merge into a celebration that continues to renew itself from generation to generation.
