The historical medieval re-enactment of Trani, between the Cathedral and the Swabian Castle
The Medieval Week is one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in Adriatic Puglia and a highlight of the summer season in Trani, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. Organized by the Trani Tradizioni Cultural Association, the event takes the city back in time every year, transforming the historic center, the Cathedral square, and the Swabian Castle into a massive open-air stage populated by ladies, knights, commoners, and performers in period attire.
The narrative heart of the event is the re-enactment of the Wedding of King Manfredi, the last Swabian sovereign, to Princess Elena Comneno: a story rooted in the history of the Kingdom of Sicily and the deep bond between Trani and the Hohenstaufen dynasty, who built the majestic castle by the sea here. Surrounding this core are triumphal processions, combat between men-at-arms, flag-waver performances, dances, shows by jugglers and fire-eaters, markets of ancient crafts, and medieval taverns.
The Swabian Castle of Trani, one of the most imposing Frederickian manors in Puglia, is the scenic centerpiece of the event. Within its walls, evening re-enactments, sound and light shows, and the famous burning of the Castle come to life, a highlight that symbolically sets the fortress overlooking the harbor ablaze. Alongside the evening program, the association dedicates ample space to education, with animated tours and treasure hunts designed for primary schools, heraldry workshops, and guided tours exploring the city's medieval history.
Born from the passion of the Trani Tradizioni volunteers, the Medieval Week has grown into a true collective ritual involving dozens of performers and thousands of visitors. More than just a costume festival, it is a way to rediscover and pass on the historical identity of the Municipality of Trani and its province, enhancing the monumental heritage of the city of the Cathedral. The setting, between the white stones of the ancient center and the blue of the Adriatic, makes the experience particularly evocative on August evenings.
The Medieval Week confirms itself as one of the most beloved re-enactments in Puglia, capable of combining historical rigor, popular spectacle, and strong participation from the Trani community.
The Medieval Week returns to Trani from August 7 to 9, 2026. The organization, managed by the Trani Tradizioni association, has announced an important change of scenery: due to work in Piazza Re Manfredi, the 2026 edition will take place in Piazza Duomo, at the foot of the Romanesque Cathedral.
The central theme of the Wedding of King Manfredi and Elena Comneno is confirmed, with new faces for the royals, as is the central role of the Swabian Castle, which will also host educational paths and treasure hunts designed for primary schools. The full program, with times, processions, and evening shows, will be communicated by the association on official channels in the weeks leading up to the event.
Event scheduled from August 7 to 9, 2026, in Piazza Duomo and at the Swabian Castle of Trani. The theme is the edition of the Wedding of King Manfredi, with costumed processions, re-enactments, and educational paths at the castle. The detailed program with times and daily appointments will be published by the Trani Tradizioni association in the weeks preceding the event.
Trani is served by the railway station on the Bologna-Lecce Adriatic line, with frequent connections from Bari (about 40 minutes) and Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway, taking the Trani exit. The nearest airports are Bari-Palese and, further away, Brindisi.
The event enlivens the historic center of Trani, the Cathedral square, and the Swabian Castle, all within short walking distance in the old town overlooking the harbor.
Events in the square and processions are generally free to access; some educational activities or guided tours of the castle may require reservations. It is recommended to check times and details on the official channels of the Trani Tradizioni association.
August evenings are very popular: it is advisable to arrive early for the processions and to book hotels and B&Bs in the historic center well in advance.
