About Feast of Sant'Adiutore

Every May 15th, the city of Cava de' Tirreni gathers around Sant'Adiutore, a bishop and martyr revered as the co-patron of the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni and traditionally remembered as the first evangelizer of the Metellian valley. Celebrations take place at the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria della Visitazione and culminate in a solemn procession with the statue of the Saint along the Corso, followed by the traditional Raising of the Banner of the Most Holy Sacrament in Piazza Duomo. Two days of faith, tradition, and community participation in the heart of the Salerno province.

A festival that tells the story of Cava de' Tirreni's identity

May 15th is a date marked on every local's calendar. On this day, the town of Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of Campania, celebrates Sant'Adiutore, a bishop and martyr, co-patron of the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni and patron of the ancient Cava diocese. This is not merely a liturgical recurrence; it is a moment when an entire community recognizes itself in its Christian roots and history, with two days dedicated to prayer, tradition, and popular participation.

Who was Sant'Adiutore

According to hagiographic tradition, Adiutore was a bishop of African origin, forced to flee during the Vandal persecution of Gaiseric in the 5th century. Along with twelve other bishops, he was allegedly abandoned at sea on an old boat left at the mercy of the waves: the ship miraculously landed on the coasts of Campania. Adiutore spent his final days here, exercising his episcopal ministry first in Benevento and then in Marcina, whose territory stretched from Cetara to present-day Cava de' Tirreni. For this reason, local memory considers him the first evangelizer of the Metellian valley. His name is also linked to the Castle of Sant'Adiutore, the fortification that dominates the city from above and remains one of the most recognizable symbols of the local landscape.

The heart of the festival: the Co-Cathedral

Celebrations take place in the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria della Visitazione, overlooking Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the city's mother church and home to the parish dedicated to Sant'Adiutore. Construction began in 1517 based on a design by architect Pignaloso Cafaro and was completed in 1587, after Pope Leo X's 1513 bull established the city's autonomy. The current facade dates back to 1823; the interior houses a 16th-century marble baptistery and a chapel dedicated to the co-patron Saint. Damaged by bombings during the last war and the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, the Co-Cathedral was fully restored to worship in December 1999.

The procession along the Corso

The most anticipated moment is the procession with the statue of Sant'Adiutore, which winds from the Co-Cathedral along the streets of the Corso, the porticoed axis that crosses the historic center and serves as the true urban living room of Cava de' Tirreni. The religious pageant, preceded by a solemn concelebration presided over by the Archbishop of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni, brings together confraternities, parishes, and families, concluding with the return to the Duomo and the singing of the Te Deum.

The Raising of the Banner, a unique local rite

Intertwined with the patronal feast is one of the city's most defining traditions: the Raising of the Banner of the Most Holy Sacrament in Piazza Duomo. The ritual act of hoisting the large banner symbolically marks the opening of the solemn festivities in honor of the Most Holy Sacrament, which in Cava de' Tirreni represents the most widely attended event of the year. Seeing the banner rise before the facade of the Duomo, amidst the crowd gathered in the square, is for the locals much more than a ceremony: it is the signal that the festival season has begun.

What to expect

  • Solemn liturgies in a setting of great historical and artistic value.
  • An evening procession that traverses the historic center and the porticoes of the Corso.
  • The rite of the Raising of the Banner, virtually unique in the landscape of Campanian festivals.
  • A collected and authentically popular atmosphere, far removed from events staged for tourism.
  • Free admission to all celebrations.

Why visit

Cava de' Tirreni is the natural gateway between the Amalfi Coast and the Irno Valley: those visiting the city during the days of Sant'Adiutore will find a vibrant center, lively porticoes, and the opportunity to combine the festival with a discovery of the Benedictine Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity and the Castle of Sant'Adiutore. It is an ideal occasion to understand how, in Campania, popular devotion continues to structure the calendar and daily life of an entire community.
