About San Cataldo Feast

The Patronal Feast of San Cataldo is the most deeply felt religious and civic celebration in Taranto. Spanning ten days between late April and May 10th, it honors the Irish bishop who made this Ionian city his home. The highlight is the spectacular sea procession on May 8th, when the saint's statue crosses the Mar Grande aboard a Navy vessel, accompanied by fireworks and the opening of the famous Swing Bridge. Solemn rites, the Palio of Taranto, concerts, and illuminations bring the entire Old Town to life.

The most beloved festival for the people of Taranto

The Patronal Feast of San Cataldo is the quintessential identity event for the city of Taranto, in the heart of the Ionian Puglia region. Every year, from late April to May 10th, the city experiences ten days of intense popular devotion, liturgical rites, civic events, music, and maritime tradition in honor of its patron saint. It is one of the most evocative patronal festivals in Southern Italy, weaving together the spirituality of the Old Town with the maritime soul of a city overlooking two seas.

Who was San Cataldo

San Cataldo was a 7th-century Irish monk and bishop, originally from Munster and educated at the Abbey of Lismore. According to tradition, while returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, his ship was caught in a storm off the Ionian coast, and he chose to stay in Taranto, becoming its bishop. His remains were discovered on May 10, 1071, during construction work for the new Cathedral, along with the famous golden cross bearing his name. Since then, the Ionian capital has venerated him as its patron, keeping his relics in the splendid Baroque chapel of the Cathedral dedicated to him.

The sea procession

The most anticipated and spectacular moment is the sea procession on May 8th. After the "pregge" ceremony in the Cathedral Basilica, involving the symbolic handing over of the saint's statue to the mayor, the statue reaches the Sant'Eligio Pier and is embarked on a Navy vessel. The procession crosses the Mar Grande followed by dozens of boats, while the famous Swing Bridge opens and fireworks illuminate the Aragonese Castle. It is a unique ritual that unites faith and the sea in a single, grand spectacle.

Tradition, sport, and culture

Alongside the religious dimension, the festivities offer a rich civic program. Notable events include the Palio of Taranto, the historic rowing competition where boats from the city's districts compete in the waters of the Mar Grande, and the Cataldus d'Argento award ceremony, honoring figures who have brought prestige to the city. The program also features concerts, peace-themed conferences, initiatives for schools and families, illuminations, and shows.

The grand finale on May 10th

The festival culminates on May 10th, the day of the Inventio Corporis and the display of the golden cross. Following the solemn Eucharistic concelebration presided over by the archbishop, the land procession winds through the narrow streets of the Old Town and the Borgo, with the moving participation of the faithful. The evening concludes with a concert and a grand fireworks display from the Aragonese Castle, sealing ten days that represent the beating heart of Taranto's identity in Puglia.

San Cataldo Feast โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Cataldo Feast took place in Taranto from April 30th to May 10th, featuring eleven days of religious and civic celebrations. The heart of the festivities was the May 8th sea procession aboard a Navy vessel, preceded by the Palio of Taranto, and the solemn land procession on May 10th with a concert and fireworks.

2026 Edition

The 2026 Patronal Feast of San Cataldo was held in Taranto from April 30th to May 10th, promoted by the Archdiocese of Taranto, the Patronal Feast Committee, the Municipality, and the Provincial Administration. The program alternated liturgical rites in the Cathedral Basilica, civic and cultural events, and major popular maritime traditions.

On May 8th, the spectacular sea procession was renewed: after the "pregge" ceremony and the handing over of the statue to Mayor Piero Bitetti, the statue was embarked from the Sant'Eligio Pier onto the Navy vessel Cheradi, with the opening of the Swing Bridge and fireworks from the Aragonese Castle. The day was opened by the historic Palio of Taranto, the district regatta. On May 10th, the festival concluded with the Inventio Corporis, the land procession in the Old Town and the Borgo, the concert by the Terraross band, and the final fireworks display.
