The historical re-enactment in Massafra celebrating the 1594 victory over the Turks

The Palio della Mezzaluna is the grand historical re-enactment of Massafra, a town in the Province of Taranto nestled among the ravines of the Ionian Puglia. Every year, at the end of summer, the historic center transforms into an open-air stage where performers in period costumes, ladies, knights, and flag-wavers bring the atmosphere of the late 16th century back to life. The initiative is promoted by the MassafraNostra cultural association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Massafra, the Terra delle Gravine Regional Natural Park, the Puglia Region, and the Ministry of Culture.
The event is rooted in a real historical episode: in September 1594, the Ottoman fleet besieged the Ionian coast for days and attempted repeated assaults in the area of the Tara River springs, just outside Massafra. The reaction of the local people, who repelled the invaders, remains etched in the city's collective memory and serves as the symbolic heart of the Palio. The "crescent moon" (mezzaluna) that gives the event its name recalls the very symbol of the defeated Ottoman Empire.
The most anticipated moment is the relay race that sees the six historic districts of the city compete: Gesรน Bambino, Pappacoda, Santi Medici, San Marco, Imperiali, and Santa Caterina. Each district fields its own athletes along a circuit that winds through the historic center, starting from Piazza Garibaldi, to compete for the banner painted each year by a different artist. The race is accompanied by a grand historical pageant, with hundreds of costumed figures and knights, and a cultural conference dedicated to the cities of the Palio and Italian re-enactment traditions, often hosted in the courtyard of the Medieval Castle.
Beyond the competition, the Palio della Mezzaluna is an identity-defining festival that marks the "Massafra September": awards such as the "Silver Palio" for distinguished citizens, propitiatory games, fireworks, and the cross-generational participation of families, associations, and enthusiasts. It is an appointment that weaves together history, folklore, sport, and popular traditions, capable of revealing the authentic soul of Massafra and its territory to visitors.
The 2026 edition of the Palio della Mezzaluna in Massafra is confirmed as part of the MassafraEstate 2026 program, the municipality's summer festival which this year revolves around the theme "The Massafra Dolce Vita". The re-enactment is scheduled for late summer, with the usual activities taking place in the historic center and the Medieval Castle area.
At the moment, precise dates and the detailed program have not yet been published: as soon as the MassafraNostra association releases the official calendar, this page will be updated with days, times, locations, and information on the six competing districts (Gesรน Bambino, Pappacoda, Santi Medici, San Marco, Imperiali, and Santa Caterina).
Massafra is located along the SS7 road between Taranto and Gioia del Colle. By car, take the A14 motorway (Massafra exit) or the SS106 Ionian road. By train, the Massafra station is served by the Taranto-Bari line. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, approximately 70 km away.
Events are held in the historic center, in Piazza Garibaldi, along the Lungovalle, and in the courtyard of the Medieval Castle.
Admission to the events in the square is generally free. Arrive early to watch the historical pageant and find a spot along the relay race route.
